Received My New Id-Edge Today...

OldeTymer

New member
It's a bit cold outside so I plan to do some bench testing. Is there anything some of you would like me to try during this phase? Let me know what, and how, you would like me to test, and I'll do my best.

OldeTymer

Old Tymer, please include a nickel and if possible a womens ring in the 2-3 gram range along with a mens band in the 6-7 gram range.

Thanks for asking for suggestions.

Tom

I have the Excel Id and have been relic hunting in Alabama. Found some more old mule shoes and shell casings today. The programs and notch info that the Edge provides are of interest to me. Just how specific are these programs? Are they useful when coin hunting etc? Will it only sound on coins and leave the trash behind? How well does it work on a saltwater beach is my biggest question? Anyway congrats and have a great time over the Holidays.

at the moment. Did some of my beach stuff with a wedding band. But I gut plenty of nickels. What are you looking for, an airest for inches or what numbers they read?

and I wanted to commend you for one of the best posts I've read in a long long time on that other forum. I really didn't mean to start a detector war....just the Fisher bashing got the best of me I guess ;) My ground is freezing & I'm sick...I guess you could say I'm quite "edgy" ;)
Anyhow, congrats on getting your Edge....Looking for forward to your thoughts.

and it doesn't matter if the tone or ID is correct just that it is a non-ferrous indication. But I would like to know the air distance it will correctly read the nickel too.

Thanks
Tom

The conditions couldn't have been much worse. Inside a room full of metal, lights on. Had the edge sitting on top of a heavy metal bookcase with a Formica top. The coil hanging over the edge about 2 feet. Had a hard time getting it to settle down at all.

Got a couple of tests in with the sensitivity at 7 before it started going nuts and playing a tune. All tests were done by setting the ground balance using an iron ferrite core. These use to come with the early Whites GEB machines. Received the single tone ground balance OK signal. No discrimination was dialed in. The discrimination was at a -36 so all targets would be heard.

1.22gm thin 14k band. Strong repeatable signal at 5". Solid repeatable signal at 6", and a 7" max signal that you would investigate.

2.96gm 14k band. Strong repeatable signal at 6". Solid repeatable signal at 7", and an 7.5-8" max signal that you would investigate.

7.98gm man's ring with black onyx stone. Strong repeatable signal at 7". Solid repeatable signal at 8", and an 8.5-9" max signal that you would investigate.

For some reason, I had to drop the sensitivity down to 6 because of instability. Re-ground balanced using the above procedure.

5.25gm 14k white gold band. Strong repeatable signal at 5.5". Solid repeatable signal at 6-6.5", and a 7" max signal that you would investigate.

2.05gm 18k thin band with 7 small diamonds. Part of a two piece set. I didn't find the big piece. Strong repeatable signal at 5". Solid repeatable signal at 5.5", and a 6" max signal that you would investigate. The 18k didn't come in as strong because of the purity of the gold.

8.47gm 14k white gold man's ring with 2 1/3 caret diamonds flanked by 6 smaller diamonds. Strong repeatable signal at 5.5". Solid repeatable signal at 6", and a 7" max signal that you would investigate.

A newer nickel gave a strong repeatable signal at 6", a solid repeatable signal at 7", and an 8" max signal that you would investigate.

I really didn't get a chance to test anything else. I will try that tomorrow. I might be able to run the sensitivity a bit higher during the day when the heat isn't running, and all the lights aren't on. In just a quick check, it seemed as though there was about an inch of difference between each sensitivity setting. Can't say for sure though without more testing.

I really like the small 1200 series box that is used on both the Id-Excel, and the Id-Edge. The Id-Edge has the same mount as a 1236-X2 for the hip-mount capability. That will come in handy with either a larger coil, if, and when, one comes available, and I can see this machine adapting itself for water hunting. (Wading, of course)

Well, I hope this helps a little. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions, or opinions just yet without getting this thing out into the field. The weather, and my work, looks like they might cooperate on Friday. I'll keep everyone posted with any new results.

Let me know if there is anything else anyone wants me to try over the next couple of days.

Hi OT,
Were these tests ran in Jewelry mode? If not it would be interesting to see if the air tests change in the different program modes. Thanks.

Please let us know the results under more favorable conditions when you get a chance.

Tom

This series was just a quick bench test under bad conditions. Discriminate mode with everything accepted. It's almost like all-metal with tone id.

I intend to try the same tests, under the same conditions :( , with each of the factory "programs". Is there anything specific you would like me to try?

OldeTymer

Have to agree with O.T. in terms of the worst possible conditions to test a detector. Did some testing in Pennsylvania over the Thanksgiving holiday as part of the field test report for Lost Treasure Magazine and sure enough, it snowed the first day we were up there. Luckily the ground did not freeze for two more days but it made for some fun detecting time to be sure . . . . and we think that we are a sane bunch????

Glad to be back in South Carolina where the temperatures are 30F warmer!

I agree with that observation about things getting better in the "real" world. Unfortunately, where I live, I don't have any place to create a test garden. I don't own any of the grounds. That would be so much better.

If the Edge can really tell the difference between clad and silver, I would like to know the differences. Thanks, Bill

I read one of somebody's posts and I bought one for a few dollars hoping that it would help me understand setting the ground balance on my X-Terra 50 better. If the Edge "automatically" ground balances, what are you doing with the ferrite core? I have been reading a lot (all I could find) about the new Edge ID and I plan to purchase one, if it is an improvement on finding "old" coins. Thanks,

Bill
