REG GoldScan Model 4 1/2

Since the board has been slow lately, here is something to look at! The unknown model before the GS5.
I want to publicly thank Reg Sniff for all the help he has been thru the last several years that I have known him. He has helped untold people worldwide to learn, how to modify and to modify himself and answers untold e-mails. The charge is usually zero!!!
This is a project that I started and ending up sending to Reg for his help. The board was modified to do DD/Mono coils, Minelab connectors were installed, the existing coil tuned to the detector to run at the new Pulse Delay of <10Usec. New low noise parts replaced older parts such as op-amp, capacitors etc. He removed high voltage hum from existing audio. A Li-Ion battery pack replaced the old heavy, separate battery box and power cord and a pigtail with headphone connector. I had removed the probe and its coil wire, there was a net reduction in weight, the battery pack is only 6.9oz. and the proble-coil wiring probably weighted 1 1/2lbs. It about as light as your typical Tesoro.
The GS has variable Pulse Delay. Variable Gain(high sensitivity pot replacement), Auto Tune was set to Automatic, Has 3 ground adjustment positions plus no ground adjustment, has Varible Disc Control that is a noise reducer, has Frequency control and Threshold. It will separate Iron and gold. It is very sensitive and very deep. Just think the new GS5 is even better!!! Don

Hi Don,
You've got a bit of history there. The New Goldscan/ Goldscan 4 was a popular machine. Pity I didn't continue developing it as a nugget hunter earlier on. Unwittingly opened the door for Minelab . Strangely, most people used it on the beach where the ground balancing was redundant, so I eventually left it off. The result was the earlier Goldquest and Deepstar detectors. Now we are back on track with the Goldscan 5, with its improved ground balance, 10us sensitivity, and two tone audio. Oh, and the probe is back; but you can unplug it if you need to. However, many users of the Deepstar 3, which has a similar probe, wonder how they ever managed without one
Eric.

Hi Eric, Yes! This was built originally by you. It goes with saying that as with this forum you have setup and as engineer, you have helped people in allowing your older models to be upgraded and having responded to these upgrades yourself by improving the GoldQuest and the GS. I think Reg should be given credit for his pioneering work in adapting the earlier models for use out West and last, but not least, Bill Crabtree has always been willing to give a helping hand and service as your dealer in the US. Hope the GS5 is a big hit!!! Don

Hi All,
Don, Kev, I appreciate the compliments, but the real credit goes first to Eric and then to Mr. Bill.
Without Eric's help, and willingness to share his wealth of knowledge, I would still be struggling with the basics of a PI. I am sure others can say the same. Eric is truly a rare person in this respect. He is one we can all appreciate because he so willing to share something that most engineers who design detectors try their best to keep a secret.
Like Eric, Mr. Bill is also quick to help anyone and provide a wealth of info also. So, between the two, they have made this one of the truly great forums.
Getting back to the original GS, one really doesn't realize how close the original Goldscan was to becoming one super gold hunting PI. One can truly appreciate Eric's intellect when they fully examine on a technical level, this PI and the features it had. Considering this original design is between 10 and 20 years old, one and only wonder what this PI would have evolved into if it had continued. Just the addition of the autotune plus updating the preamp and a few other tricks can make the original GS quite a machine even by today's standards.
However, even with the mentioned changes, the original GS still will not compare to the new GS 5. Some of the features built into this new GS 5 model are really quite unique.
Reg

Hi Dom,
Congratulation for your work with Goldsan 4. I like a lot play with pulse induction hobby and I have assembled some others detectors like, VLF, BFO and P.I. and now I'm assembling one similar version from Goldscan 4, based in the Carl schematic version.
I would like to have your help to make my prototype and If you need some thing please contact me.
Best Regards.
Ben Hur.
