Relic found near 1750's Fort site ???

Found this near the site where a Fort from the 1750's stood. I'm not sure if this dates back to the colonial era but I have found buttons, musket balls and a few coins dating back that far. It has teeth on the back which makes me think that it was maybe attached to a belt or something but the coat of arms and the name Hamilton made me curious. The dimensions are 1 1/2" inches x 1" inch. Anyone have a good guess ??? Thank you

Hamilton Family Crest:

Thanks Neil, I looked up the name and their was a Capt. Hance Hamilton there in the year 1756. You never know I guess it is possible that it belonged to him.

I hate to disappoint you, but I believe you have a piece from a modern era horse halter. As a former horse owner, I thought it looked familiar. It has the logo for a Hamilton Products halter, and a 1" nylon halter is shown with an end piece of the same shape as yours.
