Rematch of legend 2 and icon x

bigtim1973

Well-known member
Jeff McClendon asked me to lower the iron filter to 1 from 3 and try m2 or m1.

M1 and M2 are very chattery but m2 was able to have the loudest response on the last deep dime.

Also in the G profile as it was the most stable

Here is the updated video

Hey @bigtim1973 .

Thanks for your efforts in this area.
Unfortunately, this also highlights a problem I personally have with all these tests.
It comes down to two things: personal preferences and the flexibility of the parameters involved.
If the result isn't to someone's liking, they simply tweak a filter, widen a window, adjust a speed slightly, and so on.
That is exactly why I can't stand these tests.
And that is why I hunt the way I do, using the machines I want—the ones I’ve built up trust in over all these years.😊

The results in the case of BigTim's test weren't about whether someone liked them or not. The suggestions I made were twofold: to help newer, less experienced Legend 2 owners possibly get more out of their detector with a simple iron filter adjustment, and to continue to encourage Nokta to lower the simultaneous multi frequency minimum iron filter setting on Legnd 2 even more and possibly lower the iron filter default setting in an upcoming software update.

Legend 2 is a very new release. There has not yet been a software update for it since it was released 6 months ago. Minelab and Nokta are known for setting their default iron filters too high for some areas with higher natural iron content soil conditions. This causes issues depending on how the detectors are setup. The more aggressive default iron filter settings coupled with default settings rejecting iron target ID audio responses can cause deeper coin sized targets to be completely missed or at least create very iffy, confusing responses depending on soil conditions and depth of target due to those non ferrous targets being processed as mostly iron targets.

I have seen many videos of recently produced simultaneous multi frequency detectors having major problems with smaller and deeper targets due to the manufacturer's default settings and testers/infuencers using those out of the box default settings to compare detector models and make final judgements about those detector's capabilities. Often, those final judgements are simply wrong and its the manufacturer's fault, not the operator.

I look at BigTim's videos as information about the detectors he is featuring on the exact same targets. For new detectors like the Icon series and the Legend 2, these videos have valuable information for anyone interested in these detectors, or for potential or current owners of them. The information is also valuable for the manufacturers. Their default settings decisions are not always the best settings as BigTim's video proved in the case of Legend 2.

If you hate these kinds of videos, don't watch them.

Sounds like you are using a detector with one adjustment...an on and off switch!

If you are not willing to try to get the best out of a detector you are missing targets for sure.

These little videos started as a comparison of units between me and another forum member here that does not have either one of these machines. So I decided to start posting them on YouTube and sharing them if someone else happened to have any interest.

Whether you like what you see or not I redid this one and state I made adjustments.

It is only fair I did so for someone looking to get either one of these units.

As a matter of fact I have had several people message me through YouTube and thanked me because they are currently interested in both of these units.

I am also getting requests to do comparisons between units indo not even own in which I have mixed feelings about.

Notice I do not go on and on blabbering about why or why not a detector is acting like it does on a target....or why I think it needs other adjustments it does not have like a lot of so called "influencers" do. I state what mode I use and tones for the most part. The detectors do the rest of the talking.

If your hunting style is limited to never making adjustments you will pass over good targets because your unit thinks it is trash.

Anyways thank you for your continued support Vito!!

I greatly appreciate it👍

Wow. I guess I hit a sore spot with someone there. It’s certainly nice that you want to help other users—and especially the manufacturers—by helping the former set up their machines better and the latter provide customers with reasonably comparable equipment.
Besides, I don’t understand why you’re accusing me of hating these videos! If that were the case, I wouldn’t have given Tim feedback here in the first place—plus, there’s an "Ignore" button available here, too.
But back to the topic: if you’re going to make comparisons like that and push your favorite, the frequencies and coils used really ought to be the same... though I can already hear the counter-argument that, depending on the manufacturer, you can’t always choose the specific mix of settings used.
Tim, I like your videos—especially because you tune the machines to suit your specific conditions. I’ve also gained a pretty good overview of what the different brands offer and the physical characteristics of the machines—things like the display, audio tones, interchangeable accessories, and so on.
You also handle interactions with your critics in a reasonable, civil manner.
Keep up the good work.

P.S.: I do think my detectors, like the DFX and VX3, offer plenty of settings. Right now, I’m testing my ability to locate an Aureus coin inside a cannonball (however it might have ended up in there...).
and BTW, how can something be junk if I hav eto dig every thing, like you mentioned only a on/off switch. 😂🤣

Well Vito to be honest maybe I did not really understand your reply at first.

I do not have the 11 inch icon coil.

I also was not aware that the iron filter on the stock settings of the legend 2 would null out deeper targets in the disc unit. Jeff mentioned it on another forum.

With that said it is great information as I was just trying different frequencies trying to get it to react on that deeper dime.

And as far as my comment about an on and off switch I would have been more thorough with my reply as I thought you were just swinging a compadre!!

The dfx and Vx3 have many settings.

However their ability to reset and hit the next target is as good as they had at the time they were in production.

When I was a whites dealer and XP came to america I was told by my supplier, Dwight owner of Whites of the Mid South, that XP units were light and good for shallow targets but they did not have any depth, I took his opinion and went with it.

He is dead now and whites has folded so I don't mind saying it.

Stupid me!!.....I should have never listened to him.

You may be really surprised and I know you would enjoy the weight relief if you were to try a newer unit.

My targets in ground were mostly just for me to get to know a detector. I never had plans really to show the world comparison videos but some are taking note.

I am gonna be honest about this too.

Other than the HF coil for the Deus and ORX which was a gift from tnsharpshooter aka. Squirrel here on the forum....everything in those videos are my personal units.

I genrally would wait a while before I bought a new unit like the icon but I talked to an online friend who had one before we did in the UK on his thoughts about it over the phone.

And being an XP fan like I am I liked what he had to say

Also Nokta has been on the back burner with their legend 2. I don't know why but I think they stopped with any updates and such when they came out with their new gold unit.

Amyway, I do like the legend 2 but it is a bit more tedious to set up to get going for me. My biggest complaint is the symbols are so darn small. I do not like that. But it can be tuned in to perform fairly good. I like to run a unit wide open with no disc. But after talking with Jeff about the disc profiles and trying his suggestions, I have to admit the legend 2 does not perform best with a wide open disc or in the default iron filter setting.

Most guys who have a YouTube channel just show the default settings against another unit the same exact way and if you are lucky they may have some target s in the ground.

Also most will not say what kind of soil they have.

You are not going to hit a 10 inch dime where I live but you may if you live in a coastal state where the soil is sand based.

I try to piddle around with them to see what they can really do to get the most out of it and I like to share my findings.

That why I kind of do a little run down before each video.

I have owned a lot of units and have my favorites for sure through the years.

And to be honest currently I really am enjoying the little icon and icon x.

I now wish I held onto my manticore to show comparing videos with it as well.

Thanks Vito for the support, I understand more about your initial reply now!!

Hi vito,
you didn't hit a nerve with me at all. I just quoted your statements and wrote a reply.
At least here in the USA, saying I can't stand something is basically the same as saying I hate it. They are roughly synonymous.
My German is really rusty and they may not be synonymous in German.

You are free to give any opinion you have about anything on this or other forums.
I also give my opinions and my actual experience with the detectors I use in the wild, some of which others who come here may not have used yet.

I don't have favorite detectors and I am not a fanboy of any brand. I just use detectors that work well here in Colorado. There are lots of detectors that I really like a lot especially some of the older Whites detectors and would love to still own them. However, they perform very poorly here where I detect so they are a waste of my dwindling detecting time since I am almost 71 years old.

@bigtim1973 .😊

That’s how it goes.
You had mentioned before that you used to be a dealer, though I didn't know who your supplier was. Not that it really matters all that much, anyway.
The differences mentioned aren't the crucial details, either. What matters to me is how the detectors compare to one another:
>> Do I like the tones and displays? Can they find masked targets in the ground? Can I use them straight out of the box, or do I have to step in and tweak settings—and how easy is that to do? <<🙄
Also, the question of which accessories are compatible and what can be combined—like using the same search coils across different machines—is very interesting.👍
But I think we’ve discussed that before, too.
As I said, I appreciate your openness to criticism and the way you engage with your "readers."😎
In the future, I’ll steer clear of these kinds of videos and keep my personal opinions to myself; that way, no one’s toes get stepped on—even though I couldn't care less about that.😁
Since I’m not beholden to any manufacturer and can therefore speak my mind honestly, I naturally (and happily) rub many "forum users" the wrong way. I simply don't care if their "private sales" take a hit.😜
And just to clarify one more thing:⭐
All my detectors still find the same stuff they found back when they were first manufactured.👏
With that, I’ll sign off on this topic.
But I’m sure we’ll run into each other again on the forums.😃
IMHO
HH&HF🍀🤞👍😎

I am just showing how current units perform on similar tagets and if one can be set up for the best performance.

That is all.

Other than that, I really do not understand any need why you are explaining them in such detail. It doesn't really matter to me either,😁

Either way happy hunting,👍
