Well, we went to the cemetery cited in my other post, this date I was mistaken, and it was a family cemetery, with approximately 50+ graves. I had not seen it before, but it does date back to 1867, according to the historical marker on the highway a third of a mile away or so. Robert, my hunting buddy and I went to he site. He had gotten permission to hunt there from the owner, and we were both quite expectant on potential finds.
Our hunt started about 9:00 this morning, and lasted until 3 pm. I found a total of 3 coins, with the oldest being an 1897 Indian. Robert didn't find anyting except a lot of iron.
We did as discussed on this forum, circling the cemetery and working out a pattern to about 15 feet outside. The IH was in the NW corner, and it is worn......
After we stopped to eat a quick bite, I mentioned the log cabin, which, per the historical marker was closeby, and stated that perhaps we should look for it. Robert agreed, and we set off in my 4X4 pickup to the end the field we were hunting, and started back, along a barb wire fence running adjacent to a fence.
Down the fence I drove, and then Robert called out "STOP!" We got out, and sure enough, there were stones on the ground where none were present outside the immediate area. Obviously, there had been a house there we thought, and we started searching......
After a bit, Robert called out to me, "Come here Dennis!" and I approached his position....
He got up and said, "You will not believe what I found.....and he opened his hand and there she was......an 1851 Sword Belt Plate Buckle. We can surmise the history of the buckle, as the land has been in the same family forever.....There is a cellar there and I think it should be next.......LOL
Anyway, no fortune today, but it was a fine day anyway.....HH
