Review of the Garrett PRO-POINTER. :nerd: :clapping:

Opened the box and what did I find? A solid bullet proof piece of Alien technology. I think I could drive my car over it without damage! It weighs 7.2 ounces. It measures 9.1 inches long. It fit's your hand perfect. The off/on switch is two stage. Meaning that if you push it about half way down it is a momentary switch. Push it down a little father and it locks on until you push the button again. This is the way I will use it. This takes the strain off your thumb. Plus there is NO ADJUSTMENT! This for me is the best thing about it! OK the biggie! Is it too loud? I don't think so. Plus you can simply put your thumb over the speaker to reduce the sound by at least 80%. I'm not going to mess with covering the speaker. The vibration is good and strong too. I air tested a silver dime at 1.4 inches. Plenty for a pinpointer. The single 9 volt battery is easy to replace. Plus the cap has a nice O-ring to keep the elements out.
Let's talk about the holster. I think it's as nice as the probe! It's small and well thought out. It fit's perfectly without any break in. The belt strap has a single snap to secure it on a belt. Or you could just slide your belt through it. But the best thing about the belt strap is that it has velcro on it. This makes it adjustable to any width of belt you use. It will stay put.
I rate it 6 Mercury dimes out of a possible 5!
I bought mine for $119.00 shipped and was well worth it.
 
Thanks for the review. I have been trying to decide which one to get the Garrett or the Detector Pro. I like the ease of use with the Garrett but I like the depth on the Detector Pro. The DP seems to big and has to many adjustments. The sound on the Garretts won't bother me I will just cover the speaker hole.

I too have been looking at the Detector pro. Pinpointers should be small and light. The DP is not. If the DP was smaller and self adjusting I may have bought it? But it is not. So the nod goes to Garrett.
 
khouse----Your Pro Pointer has a "O" ring on the battery cap?---I just looked at mine & it doesn't have one but the cap screws on precisely close to the housing.---I really like that little pinpointer.---I do wish there was a way to cut the tone off & just use the vibrator.---I don't want to tape over the speaker & end up with sticky residue on the handle--still trying to figure out the best way to take care of that.---Garrett's got a winner here-great little product.--I'm getting a second one for my wife.-----Del
 
Yes, there's definitely an o-ring. It's at the end of the cap. I see where there is a phillips screw in the battery compartment. But I think all the components will be crammed in there. I wouldn't take it apart. Even though I'm pretty good at it. If your sure you don't want the speaker then put some silicone or epoxy in the speaker holes. I'm sure there will still be some noise because there is a felt filter in there. You might be able to remove the felt then pour the epoxy in there?
 
A couple of my other electronic pinpointers from several years back were shaped like a pistol, in that it had a barrell and a handgrip. It happened on more then one occasion where the police were called because people assumed the person was carrying a handgun. The black ones were pulled, and the colors changed to yellow. But the tuning knobs wore out after a short while and the pinpointer had to be replaced. I think the Garrett pinpointer has solved the problem of wearing out tuning knobs by making no tuning knobs available on thrie new PRO-pointer. Lots of R&D went into this new electronic pinpointer.

Del - Use gaffers tape. My dad used it for many years in audio-visual applications (things like taping cables across the floor) and it's perfect for anywhere you don't want to leave a sticky mess afterward. It holds great and doesn't leave any residue when you remove it. It can also be torn to any width or size by hand. I've used it for multiple things with my detectors including covering the speaker on my Pro-Pointer. I put felt under the tape, which muffles the sound quite a bit. Uncle Willy suggests using cork if you want to deaden the sound even more.

You can find numerous listings for gaffers tape on eBay, and I know Grainger also sells it. It's not cheap. Depending on where you buy it, $10-$25 per roll. But a roll lasts a long time. I use 2", but it also comes in 1" and 3". It comes in all different colors, I use black but a bright color might be an advantage on the Pro-Pointer in case you drop it or leave it at a hole and have to look for it.

Like everybody else has said, I think the Pro-Pointer is a great piece of equipment and well worth the price.
 
Yeah I recommended felt or cork. Cork is better. Gaffers tape is a great idea also. One could also go cheaper and use velcro strap.

Bill, I think crazy glue will do it! Heck I just got it and can't quit playing with it. Just like my wife! :rofl:
 
Guys---I didn't glue or tape my thumb :biggrin: but here's what I ended up doing tonight.---I have a roll of 2" wide black "Intertape" (Intertape Polymer Group)--I believe it to be a good tape.--I traced a circle on the tape with a penny--cut it out & put it over the speaker--being just the right size.---Turned the probe on and "walla" no tone-just vibration.--It adheres to the probe surface excellently & needs nothing under the tape to deaden the tone.--Also, it adheres so tightly that there doesn't appear to be a problem with rubbing the tape off putting it in & takeing it out of the sheath.---I have used this tape for various other applications and it works well.---Anyone interested in giveing it a shot--I think Bi Mart carries the tape.----Del
 
It won't pick up my Titanium glasses. It will pick up the hinges because of the screws. I don't have a Titanium ring to test it on. Because I have never found such a ring.
