Ring to pulltab Ratio ??

This question is mostly directed towards Explorer users. I was wondering if the ratio gets better with the top of the line detectors. I heard a story from a EX II user that said he went to beach and dug 15 rings(some to 15")and no trash in one day. He also said that he can program it to only respond to silver and that he regulary digs 20-30 or more coins with no trash. Are these exagerations? I am considering purchasing a EX II, I currently use a IDX PRO( I will keep it for my wife aka Backup detector) and allthough its awesome on coins my pulltab to ring ratio is greater than 50/1.

I suppose someone could dig rings without digging any trash but they would spend as much time analizing the signal as it would take to dig the targets. Since pulltabs and other junk are so close to the signal a ring could give, if you are not digging some junk you are missing goodies. The Explorer has excellent discrimination and ID features; you could set it up to just dig quarters if you wanted. For me though I like to make the choice to dig or not so I use little discrimination.
The 50/1 pulltab/ring ratio sounds about right to me if you are a serious beach hunter. Actually I thought it was higher than that.
Not sure why digging no trash is so important since part of the fun is being surprised once in a while. If you are only allowing coins to signal you are missing some fun and goodies definitely. Then there is the fact that once you dig a trash target you can sometimes find a goodie that was masked.
I dug a pulltab that had a large cent size 1800s foreign coin directly below. Twice I dug a zinc cent to find a deeper Indian head directly below. A shallow zinc penny signal ended up being two Indian heads, a seated dime and a two cent piece down at around six inches. I don't know how many junk signals ended up being cool buttons.

Sure he can set up to get the high coins, but unfortunately gold rings run from low foil to screwcap so would not be probable as many junk items mimic gold rings. Basically on the beach dig all as digging is easy.
Inland in parks going for rings some have learned various audio differences or may just cancel out several tabs that are all over the park to cut down the odds by not digging these tabs. In any case no sure fire way to tell but one can cut down the odds and wouldn't even try to guess the ratio as some areas are junk heaven and fall in aeas where gold rings also do...

That's just it. I can believe he didn't dig any or much junk in a few instances, but you're surely missing goodies with the junk. On the other hand if you are pressed for time in a given area and want to make the most of it then I could see doing that.

Hearing about the Explorer. I have been in the hobby 4 years now and I get more excited every spring about getting out there with my detector. My wife has also taken an interest in MD'ing so I find myself competeing to use my IDX PRO. I can not say one bad thing about that machine especialy in the modern junky areas that I hunt. I have narrowed my list down to four detectors DFX, MXT, EX II, Quattro and leaning hard to EX II.
I Will have the oppretunity because of where I live in Oregon to do some nuggetshooting occasionaly(2-3 times a year for now). I dont live by the beach but I would like to hunt the beach when I do go(4-5 times ayear) My IDX PRO didnt do well at all here I couldn't hunt in wet sand at all and I ONLY dug alluminin cans. How user friendly are the minelab machines ie: interface, controls, balance, battery discharge, target info.??? Keep up the great posts
