Roland ... Hunt #147

Roland speaking of older coins. Look what I found this morning. 1920 buffalo nickel about 3" down. Thanks for looking..... Happy Trails....Z

Very nice! Like I said before, I'm still looking for my first one!! I do have 3 Hot Wheels cars now. One of them incurred a little fender damage from the retrieval out of rock hard red clay......digger bites.

Thanks Roland. I don't run my F70 at max (Sens@60) and I use a 6.5" coil because most of my coins are 3" to 5" so I have a nice quiet detector and still dig my share of coins. And many times when I pin point the target it is right there when I turn the plug over, sitting in the hole waiting for me to pick it up. I only have to dig a small plug to have that coin sitting right there in the center. I really like that small coil. Thanks for reading and Happy Trails....Z

Zeekeys,
I was told that running the detectors at high sens was equivalent to using high beams on a car and that mineralized soil was equivalent to fog, so, turning down the sens. in highly mineralized soil would allow the detector to "see" better. What can you tell me about that?

Roland I have run the F70 sens@ 99 but after about an hour I am pretty much exhausted. You really have to listen to the changing sounds that are coming at you constantly. It is not my favorite way to detect. I really don't have highly mineralized soil here. But like most detectors when the Sens is too high they will start talking back to you. I always question that kind of operating again because most of my finds are around the 1"-5" range. I have found deeper coins and many have turned out to be clad or memorials. I have found early 1900's coins in the 1"-5" range. thanks for reading and Happy Trails....Z

I have in the past run my F70 at very high sens and low disc and would get old coins, including barber dimes, IH and large cents greater than 6 inches deep, sometimes 8-10. Spending whole days with those settings (which Ive done) is difficult- if you dont take breaks you might ignore good signals, cause you get auditorally fatigued. You re lucky to have such a clear date on the Buffalo nickel that early- good finds. CO

CO thanks for reply. Yes, you get tired listening to those signals constantly coming at you. It is supposed to be relaxing and fun hobby. Not nerve racking nervous exhaustion. A good exhaustion from a long fun hunt is a different tiredness. CO you and I know we will never find them all.
I am for the first time in many years digging in the parks and I really don't want to dig a 10" hole. And being old dead eye here I could miss the target by a few inches and make the hole even bigger. A 3" hole and my left knee are about at my limits, physically. When getting up it is common to hear a loud OOOOHHHHH coming from this strange looking old guy. When, by accident I find a target that is down 6" or more I have to lay down and continue the digging. I have had a number of people ask me if I am alright while laying there digging.
Believe it or not those pictures of the older coins were found with the Tesoro DeLeon. That is one machine that I wish I still had. Sorry I traded that guy. Thanks for reading and Happy Trails....Z

Now that's funny, Z. I know the sound you refer to all too well. It would not do for us to hunt together, we would sound like a low budget porn movie. Can't lay down and dig here, the fire ants would carry you off!

Got to agree with you Ro, In trash or MIN ground dropped the SEN to 6 on the 1270, it got awesome depth, but MAX SEN would drive you nuts, couldn't take the side noise for long cut the SEN and DISC down and the stuff popped up. Finding the 75 LTD is still going real deep with lower sen when needed, heck most of the cracks and pops are bum signals anyway. I learned with the 1265X that MAX is NOT always the best.....And the 5" coil is awesome on the 1270 and totally out there on the F75 still shoots real deep.
