Ron's Meter

I'm sure there's a thread or two on this subject somewhere in the archives - but I couldn't find one.

SO - I'd appreciate any feedback (pro & con) you can offer about using one of Ron's meters on the GT.

A review of Ron's home made meter along with some pics of it mounted various ways...

I'll be doing a Youtube video review of it pretty soon here. It's a great meter, and Ron's doing a huge service by making these for people when they can't find any of the defunct Minelab/commercial meters used since there are no commercial meters being made now. All about his passion for the Sovereign IMO.

Hi berryman. I've used Ron's meter for a couple of months now and it work's flawlessly. It's simple to install and the wires are compact and are easily wrapped around the shaft for a nice compact and secure package. You can mount it anywhere on the shaft and it stands upright far enough to be easily viewed. If you hip-mount you will have to buy an extension from Radio Shack though. It's only about $5. The price is right and it's a very nice meter. It run's on it's own battery which was supplied with mine. That's actually pretty nice to have it run on it's own power supply as you can turn it off if you want to and just hunt on tones alone.

My meters have been improved since I first started making them. The feed backs from users have help find any problems and make improvements.I use this meter in the field myself and find its performance outstanding.LOL I hope Ronnie's long cord in FL is holding up.My latest idea is to build a meter that mounts on your headphones(micro screen) the line of sight just left or right eye level just out of your line of vision. The new Y cords are difficult and expensive to make, but work very well and make this meter the best line of sight convenient and easy to use. Good Luck HH Ron

Quite simply...The cat's meow!! You won't have a minute of doubt if you purchase one. It just simply works.

I purchased my first metal detector (Sovereign GT) in July at the advise of my Brother-in-Law and after doing some reading and research. I was under the impression that Minelab still had a meter for the GT. Found out after my detector arrived that there was no longer a commercially manufactured meter available for the Sovereigns. I was having extreme difficulty understanding what the GT was trying to tell me due to bad hearing. In fact I was beginning to regret my choice of metal detectors. I purchased one of Ron's Meters. It has been a godsend. With the meter giving me a visual reference I am finally beginning to understand some of what the GT is trying to tell me. As long as Ron keeps making those meters I will NEVER be without one on my GT.

Hey Ron
Yes I have no problem with the long cord you made me ....works out perfect as does the meter. I'm 100% happy the way you treated me and others on this forum. I also have no problem letting people know that are standing on the fence, thinking if they should buy it or not. To just buy it because it comes with the best customer care too !!! As you know we were hit with a tropical storm last week with high winds and I'm having a ball on the beach lots of money some jewelry and very few gold pieces.

Berryman you need to try one and don't drive yourself crazy thinking about it.

Thanks Ron

Ron's been a lifesaver for many of those that have a Sovereign with no meter. The meter helps with learning the Sovereign as so many tones and many your ears can not tell the difference in, but this 180 meter has made the Sovereign so much easier to use as not only you have the tones, but a meter to tell you what the target probably is. I know with my bad hearing the 180 meter has helped me learn and understand the Sovereign to the point I been very successful with the Sovereigns to make it one of the best detectors I have used in my 39 years of detecting. I used the Sun Ray DTI meters until they were discontinued and did some mods on the 550 meters to make them 180 meters, but these are hard to find anymore, so I have to thank Ron for taking the time to make these 180 meters he sells and only for a fraction of the cost the others have cost. These are well thought out meters and have more options to mount them than the others did too, like I said he is a lifesaver for us with the Sovereigns.

Ron, awesome idea with a headphone mounted small VDI near one of your eyes for people. Just make sure it can be clipped on left or right side of the headphones so people can use either eye's side vision to watch it. I'm almost blind in my right eye so I'd be wanting to use my left eye to watch the meter when I want to.

At the cheap price Ron is building these for it obviously ain't about making money. If he wanted to do that he could easily be asking twice the price with no other options out there, as as the Digisearch meter went for I think $175 new and still does if you are lucky enough to find a dealer who has one still in stock. Obviously Ron is making these for people that can't find any others used just for his shear love of the Sovereign and trying to help the community. I know because if you price out the parts involved, let alone the labor, there isn't much room there for a big profit or such. Hat's off to Ron. Ron's meter is much better in many ways, and without the long bulky extra coil cable cord you have to wrap around the shaft.

Oh hey Ron, an added idea for the above meter instructions. Is the mount long enough to bend for mounting on the hand grip. To mount vertical on it? I never looked at that with mine and just mounted it down the shaft since it's high enough to not have the grip block it. Just an idea to make it longer at the mount base for people who want to grip mount, and also I'd include that option in the instructions so people know they can bend the mount and stick it there if they want on the stock grip. If people are using a bike end bar for a grip no need to bend the mount, since it'll mount where the end bar bends up and over the hand grip area.

PS- With the idea for the "eye meter"- Ever watch Star Trek The Next Generation? Think Borg- "Coins....Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated..."
