Apparently no one on the forum has MDed there. I posted the question on Garretts and Whites and NO one responded.
Thanks for responding.

I've hunted at towns and hamlets along the Rte. 66, as it goes through the desert in So. CA, and some spots in Arizona. Just the predictable coins of the era for that road, at old auto-camp pull-off spots, parks in cities along the route, etc..... Wheaties, silver coins (of the auto-era), etc... Naturally some of the cities along the route are older than the origination of the east west road of the name-sake. For example, they could be originated from earlier mining towns, or RR Towns, etc.... And as the auto-roads began to lace from east to west, naturally they would follow/connect towns already in existence, and also simply follow roads (trails, routes, etc...) that were already there. Because of course earlier travel routes would already have gone the "path of least resistance" from a topographical perspective. So we of course found coins that predated the "rte. 66" namesake auto-road. For example, in Needles, CA I got some barbers, IH's, and a $1 gold coin, that would have predated any people-traffic from the days when that was a Rte. 66 hub.

Hey Salida, Just posted a minute ago a response on the Whites Main Detecting Forum. TC-NM

Thanks for the input.
I imagine the places have been hit hard by other MDer's over the years.

Hi Salida, Back before my metal detecting days, I Hitch-hiked 66 from Ark. to Calif. "to and fro" a couple of times and rode the Greydog several times same way. That would have been in 55-57,,, Yeah, those were Good ole days ,,, sorta, but wouldn't even think of it now. I do remember while being elevated in the Greyhound, seeing in some of the desert stretches that there was what remained of what looked like an old board road. It paralleled 66 in broken stretches for miles in several desert areas. I remember thinking then that it must have been an earlier road.At that time much of it was covered by sand and what could be seen was mostly dis-jointed and scattered but still showing it's original intent. Seems I remember seing this on both sides of 66, but can't say that for sure.Just thought I would add this as it agrees with what Tom spoke of.HH, Charlie

Well your older than I am for sure. You must be in the 70's. I hitting 67 real soon.

I wish I had heard of metal detecting back in the 70's and 80's. because back then with a good detector you
could travel the highways, dig up enough change to put gas in the car and buy a meal. Gas was .35 cents a gallon. The good old days.
Now five of six dollars won't buy much of anything.
