I thought i found a common Yale lock on the lot with my recent finds i posted. I decided to clean it and there it was--- "RFD", and "Mail' on obverse, not Yale like i thought. still cleaning it some. RFD means "Rural Free Delivery" for the rural postal routes. I think its an Efraim lock. Started in 1893 after legislation pasted by a Georgia Congressman named Watson. Was delayed until 1896 to start. Before that farmers had to come into town to get mail unlike city folks in the 1800's. In 1913 amid objections by shopkeepers in town--Parcel Post was passed- then came the mailorder business. I was actually named after an asst postmaster general in charge of the Rural routes. so neat find for me.
sorry for the double post- could not delete the other.
