Sad news at our beach

Just a note to tell those of you that haven't heard,A 265metre long container ship struck a well defined reef 22kms off shore from our mainland,and now our beautiful pristine clear waters and white sandy beaches are now being invaded with heavy fuel oil,not to mention the suffering nesting penguins and migratory birds.Last night in heavy seas around 70 containers were washed overboard and are now afloat and drifting towards the coast,Unfortunatly it is very rough at the moment hindering attempts to remove the 100 tonnes of fuel oil still on board.I know this is not your normal thread, but I felt it is very important to us all as we never think this will happen in our own backyard.It will be a while before I can get down to the beach for a 'detect.....thanks for looking....jim

Sorry to hear about the shipwreck Jim. We've had our share of oil spills over here on this side of the globe during the past couple years, and I can tell you it is tough on the ecology and the economy. Hope the "experts" get the issue under control soon and clean-up can begin. Keep us posted. HH Randy

Perhaps I should have mentioned I live in New Zealand,At a place called Mount Maunganui which is a smaller holiday resort on the central east coast of the north island,The latest reports are that the weather forcast is improving so hopefully the experts can make an attempt to get the oil off loaded.

Just saw it on the news Jim....thought of you, but didn't know if you lived in that area...New Zealand has copped its share of disasters over the last 12 months...hope they can minimize the damage, but it looked pretty bad, with the potential to get much worse. Sorry to hear that it's happened.

North western NSW, Jim. I just hope it's a great game. Both the Wallabies and the All Blacks had awesome (for different reasons) games last Saturday. Should be a good game.

BAD stuff for the ocean and beaches and everything that lives on, in or uses them
Ships captain. must have been asleep...they say the reef is well charted
Hope it cleans up asap

Hi Jim , Just looked at the news and the ship is breaking up . So sorry to see this kind of thing happening to the reefs because the captain wants to short cut . I live in North Queensland and saw the damage caused by the same careless navagation. At least the one in aus was dragged off and saved but i think you may not be so lucky. Your best bet may be a container of T Vs ?

Yup, They should be able to clean up the mess. Look at how well they did on the Gulf Coast beaches in the US after the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Word is they cleaned up pretty well, But I live in the Northwest part of the USA and do not have first hand knowledge. The cost was horrific though.

Now to put a treasure hunter spin on things (its wrong i know), I wonder what is in the containers and how much of it will make it to shore to be found by the beach hunters. Or scuba hunters.

I heard a fair amount about it on the radio this morning.One of the guys in charge of the clean up was interviewed for a few minutes. he said that it's going to take several months to clean it up. The beaches are just coated in oil sludge. The ships captain has been charged with a number of offences already. At least it won't be as extreme as the oil rig disaster over in the Gulf of Mexico though; still, it's pretty bad.
