Safari ......Deep ?

Question for you Safari guys .......When you want to run as deep as possible , how do you have your machine set up ? .....I'm asking this because I would like to know if I'm missing any settings on my machine .... Will I get cllearer tones or deeper readings if I am running in Ferrous mode looking for coins ? ......Sensitivity I'm sure is gonna be sensitive depending on soil and trash conditions, but starting off in Auto is fine , and making sure to do a noise cancel after any change of settings is essencial ..... I'm assuming everyone will run in Low Density ? ..... Try not to Descriminate too much ...... Keep my coil clean and close to the ground ......Am I missing anything ? .....Are there any other adjustments ? ....Thanks for your help ...Jim

Hey Jim;

I'm a new safari owner, but have hunted with the explorer for YEARS.....First, is it deep?? Absolutey, every bit as deep as the original explorer... I set the safari up running auto sens, run relic program crossed saved to coin/jewelry slot( tho, I guess I really don't need the icons showing).... I preferred the ferrous sound VS the cond with the explorer, so I just continued on with them on the safari... Haven't tried high density yet, so not sure how the id will differ, if any...

I knew going in, that the ID on the safari is not as refined as I was used to, but wasn't sure till I tried it to see if I'd like it...........Do I like it??? Not really.. Too many targets get jumbled in the # id set-up. Will it go deep.. OH Hell Ya..

Just my thoughts... Mark ( ohio )

Jim,

I always hunt in Conductivity. Today when hunting I double checked my targets in All Metal Ferrous and could barely pick out the silver tones. I would have missed 3 of my silvers today had I been hunting in ferrous, but I am used to Conductivity now so that plays a big part for me. I would need more practice in Ferrous to be proficient.
I do not use Auto Sensitivity. I usually run 16-18, but you have to adjust based on if the detector runs stable or not without falsing. I hunted a spot two weeks ago that even in Auto it was not stable and eneded up at 9 for sensitivity.
I always run in High Trash Density. The Quattro book says that the low setting gets better depth and the target ID is more stable, but if there is a lot of trash or iron, I think High is the way to go.
For me the Safari has been real easy to learn, I just listen for that certain tone that says "I'm a coin, dig me up".
I have found that I have to hunt more meticulously than the my friend with the Etrac. Once I hear that iffy tone, I slow way down and take short choppy strokes from different angles across the target. I am speaking of those targets that are lying next to iron or other trash. Sometimes I'm wrong, but today the area I hunted was loaded with iron. After recovering those silver coins I scanned the area in All Metal and there was iron all around it.

Well thats how I have been hunting so far, but I really need to take the time to see how Low Trash Density works in some of these areas.

Thanks for the replies .....I guess it's a matter of preference as to whether to run in Conductivity mode or in Ferrous mode depending on what tones you hear better ......I had an interesting time out on Saturday ...I had thought that as long as I did a noise cancel , that my Auto Sensitivity was in full effect ....Then I started messing with my Sensitivity and did my noise cancel and realized that the Sensitivity stayed right where I put it ....Hmmmmmmm....I thought I was in Auto Sensitivity, but my number stayed right where I left it ....Hmmm . strange .... ....My buddy looked at me and said " So how do you go into Auto Sensitivity " ....I looked at him and said " all I have to do is noise cancel " ....Well , when I saw that it wasn't working I was lost ....I didn't know what to say, and I was searching all over the Sensitivity range for a way to work with the Safari, all the while trying to find where "AUTO SENSITIVIY " was ...... ...I finally jacked the Sensitivity all the way up till it couldn't go any further in frustration , and lo and behold , the Auto Sensitivity showed itself for the FIRST TIME !!!.....Now I was FINALLY in Auto Sens mode !!!.....I've read every book that Andy put out and there is NO MENTION at all about how to go into Auto Sensitivity mode !!.....It only says that the Safari is shipped in Auto Sens mode ....Well i bought a used Safari .....I felt relieved and STUPID at the same time when I finally found Auto Sens !!..... I can tell you this much , there was a lot less going on in my headphones in Auto Sens mode .... So the Sensitivity was running too high most of the day !!!.... Perhaps a notation about how to get into Auto Sensitiviy would be in order ..... I would hope to think that I'm not that stupid ....??????

One other thing that through me off was the number 40 popping up right at the edge of the null .....Every time I heard that , I was thinking SILVER !!!!..... I would go back to it and would most of the time never get it to repeat moving the coil at different angles ......Again, my sensitivity being too high didn't help either .... It was when I FINALLY got everything working correctly , that I came across my first Silver Dime !!!........An 1898 Barber !!!.....YES !!!!.......I was a happy camper !!!.... I think that with my hearing that I will stick with the Conductivity Mode for my coin hunting ....That higher pitch and the higher numbers just hits me better than the lower pitch ....I stayed in Low Density as the book said you can go deeper with the Low Density setting .....I will also try High Density to see how I like it ..... I can see an E trac in my future , unless a new Minelab comes out that betters it .....I'm glad I started with the Safari ....It's a pretty easy machine to run, and set up properly, it will hit some great targets .... No , it's not pefect , but I don't guess ANY machine is .....It works for me , for now, and that's all that counts ....Jim

Thanks for the story synthnut
I got my new safari yesterday and am still learning how to understand the noises vs sounds vs what I actually dug up....
Lets just say the first day out was enjoyable but nothing good found.

BTW, I found the autosense really quick, but only cause when you go in to the menu to adjust the sensitiviy you move the setting down from 20 which is auto sense, so I figured if I went back up to 20 the auto sense would show back up and sure enough it did.
I forgot to take the manual along so I wasn't sure how to use the noise cancel. Like for example do you leave the coil on the ground, etc.. Anyways I ended up figureing that out as well after I got back home.

I dug two modern dimes out of a volley ball sand area that were around 9" down. Not bad considering the other detectors I have tried in that sand didn't like it.

Hello itfchaos,
I think I can say this a little easier for you, just to help you out. When you open up the Sensitivity on the Safari, take the right arrow and press it all the way until you get to 20. Press it one more time. It will highlight the auto. You are them in auto sensitivity. You might have said this, I just could not quite understand. Hopes this helps you. Happy Hunting, Clyde

Once you have your settings the way you like them , and you have your sensitivity the way you like it , you can do your "Noise Cancel" with your coil on the ground , or 12 inches in the air ...Just make sure that you don't have a null or a target under the coil when you do it ...Find a spot in your search area where you only hear the hum of the threshold and hold the coil still for the entire time of the noise cancel ...... I have not noticed any difference in depth or anything else for that matter whether I noise canceled 12 inches in the air , or on the ground ..... Jim
