I have an 8 x 6 SEF coil for my Minelab. Before attaching the coil to the detector, you need to stretch the coiled part a bit. then turn the lower rod upside down so the connector part comes out of the top of the lower shaft. Next attach the upper rod and lower it almost all the way down over the lower shaft. Next attach the connector to the detector, and slide the upper rod back up until the whole thing is the correct length for you. Then snap it into place. It's very easy although I made my task even easier by purchasing a separate lower rod (very expensive) for my SEF coil.
By the way, I use the 8 x 6 SEF coil 99% of the time. It makes the detector so much lighter, and I still get excellent depth with that coil. So far in the short time I have been out this year in Wisconsin, I have dug three silver dimes, and three Indian Head Cents. Yesterday, I dug a very deep Wheat cent that I measured was down 9 Inches. I don't need to dig any deeper than that, and I can swing (slowly) my Safari all day with that 8 x 6 little coin on it. Actually, a few years back, all the detectors came standard with an 8 inch coil, so my SEF coil is really not a "little" coil at all. I hunt a lot in fairly trashy parks and school yards and the larger coils are constantly beeping with 2-3 different items under the large coils. To make a long story short, I get excellent separation, excellent pinpointing and excellent depth with my 8 x 6 SEF coil. It's all I need.
