I received my new Safari today. She is a beauty. I took her outside for a test run...she speaks alot of different languages. Almost everywhere I tried I got signals. I dug a couple of signals just to test her out and they were both pennies. The numbers on the Safari are different than an X-Terra 70. Is there a post somewhere that gives you a general idea of how things normally register? Common clad coins and basic jewelry numbers would be great. I did get to a couple of spots where her numbers started jumping all over the place? I like the Safari. It will just take some time until I understand everything she is trying to tell me.

Congrats on your new Safari. I love mine too. On the California beach I detect, a quarter registers a +38 a dime +37 Depending on how corroded it is. A nickel hits on +14 or +15 ,Mostly +15 must depend on how deep it is or what angle it is. Hope this helps, you'll just have to write down every target number for awhile or just remember. If it gives me a good sound I dig it no matter what the number is. Have a fun time with your new detector,Gene
 
Hey Gene, that's strange that you mentioned how nickels come in on your screen as +14 or 15. Andy Sabish's book says the same thing, but on my screen they always come in at +13 for buffalos. For modern clad they are +13 or 14. Sometimes the numbers can bounce back and forth if the coin is on edge, but generally I can count on +13 being a nickel. I wonder why it varies from one machine to the next? Type of ground? Noise cancelling? Variance from one detector to another? Who knows.

Plus 13 for me is a pulltab, but the sand around here is pretty black in some dry parts of the beach and as you say sometimes the number bounce around, but in most of those cases it's multi targets. This machine sees all the targets at the same time and tells you about it. I've found that most of the time there is a good target amoung all those sounds and jumping numbers. It's called dig them all till the sounds quit. Which I don't mind, because that's what I'm out there for. Sooner or later It pays off. By the way I live in Southern California. Gene
 
Thanks for the replies. The Safari numbers just register alittle different than the X-Terra 70. Overtime, I will get this new machine to quiet down alitlle. I think the biggest difference with the Safari is it see's everything at the same time. And in most cases there are multiple targets in the area that I detected. Thanks again.

Hi all, It is most likely soil conditions as nickles are usually+22-29 odd isn't it ? Haven't found any Buffalo's yet. My last hunt was an old park/ballfield, very trashy. Did some rejecting on pull tabs, but I had to reject so many numbers that I went back to accepting them. Was going to go out today but it's raining.
I did find 1 IH 1891, lots of pennies, some dimes, lots of trash, and a heavy gold chain with big links(bracelet). Unfortunately I think it is plated, going to have to clean it better. Going to try another park that was dedicated in 1876, but it was still a park before that. Probably going early Sat. morning before most of the city of Holyoke, Ma is up and about, I don't like to draw a crowd. I haven't detected this park yet, it is in the city where I grew up, I live out in the country now, Belechertown, Ma. Hey Hook, I think you're really going to like the safari (be patient with her) I've used mine on the beaches of Cape Cod already, and I can tell you....... I had a brain fart, oh yeah I might consider bringing a shovel because of the depth you get on the beach. I found a fishing lure at 18+", no joking!! I just have to scrim out more of the trash. It got a great strong sound/signal on a penny sized gold hoop earring 8"+. My arms were sore by the time I was finished detecting. I will be posting photos of this years finds from Feb-present.. Just checked my two day old. Safari.it's 15 on nickles................I will add this.Years ago I used Sov (17 Frq) and DTi meter..145 nickles and 138 Buffalo Nickles..a slight spread on readings..I think it would be a plus if Safari had a small spread.....Just a thought.
 
Hi El, I might have to double check the nickle thing, as I haven't found any nickle's the past 2 outtings. I am relying on memory so I could be wrong ! How do you like your safari ? Hope it turns out to be a good machine for you. Ron

I'm thinking about trading it for something else...It's a whole Three (3) days old:shrug:.
 
Somehow I am not surprised you are ready to trade lol. Maybe a prism 6T? I somehow think you are kinda looking for what I am. A simple to use deep accurate detector. I just don't have the money to trade like you do so I keep an eye on your quest. The reason I mentioned the 6T is it is on my short list of "I want" along with the Xterra 705 or maybe the F75. So many good detectors, so little money. The Safari is one I have watching too but the learning curve on the tones mite be a bit steep for me as I am hearing impaired.

is this. Not the detector. It's me. Safari is a top notch unit. I just have a different detector I have used I prefer..
 
I have had my Safari for a few months now and I have cussed and discussed it quite a bit. I had and to some degree still having problems understanding all I know about it! And like Elton, it's me not the machine. I was use to Garrett equipment and just a few tones and the Safari has many many tones to try to interpret. Also I did not realize how much I had been depending knowing the approximate size of the target to decide to dig or not. One feature I miss a lot. The Safari does out do my Garrett machine on depth and that was one thing I was interested in for relic hunting. Al in all I am fairly happy with my Safari, with a but.....but if Garrett decides to upgrade the electronics on its GTI 2500, I will probably switch back. Just my humble opinion. Onus
 
Did some rechecking on the nickles, yep! You were right El, it is 15, but I have found that the numbers can vary by -/+ 2 numbers depending where the coil passes over the coin, and by how close or far the coin is from the coil. Give it a chance, you have the same response to the safari as most of us have had.
I used a white's xlt for almost 10yrs straight. Ron

I am the last one to give you advice. I have only been back to detecting, (I go in summers),this is my 4th summer. I have had 6 detectors. They just weren't right or they didn't feel right or couldn't really get anything out of the detector that I thought it should do. The Safari is without a doubt, the one that feels good, feels right and I want to get into it more. It is fun detecting with it. I hardly know anything about the dog gone thing yet but gad it works just fine. It covers the hole beach. I had to slow up because the other machines were much faster and I could cover a lot of ground. If I swing the Safari the way I did with the other detectors I have to go pretty far back to find the target. I swing slower and move slower not covering a lot of ground, but the strange thing is I find as much or more coins even covering less ground. I have to stay awake because the sounds are not 1 of 4 tones. There are so many I have to look at the meter after the sound and go around the target and the numbers dancing from - to + and than again some stay right there at 14 or 15 or 37. Or get a low tone -5 with a high squeak with a 35 reading popping in. Those are the guys I like. Some times a deep coin near foil or a very deep can.
The one thing I have noticed about the Safari is that it punches through the sand. I am not swinging a very light detector for 6 hours and find 15 coins and all of them are a few inches down. Every time I have been out with the Safari I have dug targets over 4" or more. I am just not digging the surface coins. I am digging the much, much deeper coins. When I am done hunting I don't feel it was a wasted day because of the deep finds I have been finding.

Zee, I agree you can easily walk past a target that has beeped. As in an earlier post, really deep targets both on and off the beach. The beach being the deeper. I hope El can find what suits him best. I'm gonna stick it out with the safari, never come home skunked. Ron
 
Nope haven't been skunked yet with it.
I actually have to work to hunt now both in digging and in deciding if I should dig the target or not. It is not a slam dunk, thats a good target. I feel like a cleaver detectorist looking for a target now and not just swinging a detector and stopping and picking up a coin with one scoop of sand. There is that wonder connected to it now that makes it more exciting and harder. Like someone said," You have to love the hunt", to stick with it.:detecting:...Z
