Safari ID numbers

I have just started metal detecting within the last couple months. I have a the minelab safari and love it, easy to use and findin lots of cool stuff. I have found about 50 wheats at an old house along with a couple silver pieces of jewely. And found vast amouts of clad coins from our local park. I amd getting solid 36 readings on pennies 37-40 on quarters and dimes and lots of times get high readings on aluminum junk. Is this normal? If so why does the writing below the display say gold-aluminium??? My question is this If I am basically coin hunting should I only use the higher ID's say 35-40 or should I also expect to find coins reading 20-35?

Funny how all safari's have slight differences in VID#'s. Soil must be the determining factor. I've never had a silver coin read at 40, in fact I have scrimmed out on my machine because everything I've dug at 40 was a hot rock. The only thing i had read at 39 was a Barber half, and the other barber half I found rang in it 38. My readings - 14 nickel, 37 dime, 38 quarter or half dollar. Pennies are a crapshoot, anywhere from 32-37, some indian head pennies will ring at 18-22 (fatty injuns), 3 center/trime - 24-28 (the few I've had the chance to get a reading before digging) So unfortunately in a nutshell you can expect to pick up coins between 12-40! I run mine in custom setting, I have -10 thru 12 deselected and 40 deselected, everything else is wide open. Don't pay any attention to the chart showing what is foil, lead, gold etc. The only thing i really use the display on the safari for is the depth meter, after a few thousand holes and digging LOTS of trash I usually make my determination on how clean the signal is and if its a good repeater.

I also find nickels in the 13-15 range and cents in the 32-35 range. Just got a Indian cent at 33.:clapping:

If you are hunting in High Trash mode,Target ID will be affected. For better target ID if you can hunt in low(depending on trash) will make your response on target louder and larger also.I will tell you what, if I get to hunt a house that has never been hunted before and permission was granted by one spouse I cherry pick yard first hunt high 25 to 39 open. Recover as much as I can this will get most Indians also.Been too many times other spouse came home later and I was asked to leave or may not get invited back for one reason or other.Renter lets me on and owner comes by ask me to leave.Once you do this you can lower disc and re hunt yard.Fog has great reply I am not to fond of nickels I hunt a little higher than he does.

Prep our hunting methods are very similar, when i get to a new site I usually only dig targets from 30-38. If the site produces and is worth a second visit I dig everything that repeats from 14-39. 99 percent of my hunting is in the woods so digging 14's isn't always an option or I'd end up with 80 shotgun shells to find one nickel.

Been hunting in low trash, relic mode lately and agree with Prep that you have better tid accurancy and consistency on finds. TNdigginsafari, try hunting in relic and all metal as you'll soon be able to discern the subtle audio difference between silver and clad coins of the same denomination. I still bring worn coins of the type I expect to find in the field with me. Throw 'em on the ground, do a noise cancel, then familiarize yourself with their tid & audio responses. It doesn't always happen with silver coins, but on occasion, the graph id bar will show pointing to the 'i" in Silver, instead of on the "s'. Do the same with different types of trash so you'll know what to dig or not to.
