Safari- Likes-- Dislikes for old coin hunting. Any opinions?

I have had an ETRAC but really couldn't get used to the graph. What are the pros and cons of the Safari not counting the weight?

Thanks for any input.

My biggest beef with the Safari is its lack of separation between coins of various denominations, why they lumped them so close together TID-wise, I'll never know. It also eats batteries just like the Etrac, other than that it is a great turn on and go detector, simple to operate and hits hard on coins (although you might not always know which one). It also has excellent depth and works well in mineralized ground and inspite of not having all the bells and whistles like the Etrac and Explorer Se have, it still gets good separation in trash. Some have a problem with rusty nails and screw caps reading like coins, but can't say that it has ever been much of a problem for me. Hopes this helps...

Thanks for the reply Mtnmn. It seems that they are not real popular. Maybe it's the price point compaired to the SE.

One last note, I've found just out lately that by cutting back on my sensitivity, it is easier to I.D. coins and especially nickels. Sorry about the rant on the Safari's coin separation and batteries usage, have found a partial solution for the first problem and most already know how hard FBS detectors are on batteries. All I know for certain is once I've gone over a site with the VLF XT-70 and then re-hit it again with the FBS Safari, there isn't much left for the next guy. Almost feel sorry for them!

I really don't think it is the price difference as the Explorer is $300 more than the Safari which seems like quite a bit to me. People just seem to like the extra features that the Explorer and Etrac have to offer. Personally I think the Safari has a lot to offer for the money and other than digging a penny every once in awhile when expecting a dime or quarter, it is an excellent detector.

Well said,Mtmnm. When hunting in relic mode (less bombardment of tones compared to all metal), I do hear better coin separation id (silver vs clad ) over coin, coin/jewelry mode. Since I've been hunting woods and fields lately, I've elected to hunt mostly in low trash, which provides better tid than high trash density. Love the depth the Safari provides,so I take a short handle digging shovel and can keep the gator digger in my back pocket. In addition, a slow sweep is critical to the Safari recoveries.
I think it's Prep or Hershey that tend to hunt with sensitivity at 17 or under.

I have other coils but I have gotten to the point that the 11" Pro never comes off. Man you can cover some ground and it has great seperation. Both of my hunting buddies have ETRACs and I have been wanting to move up but I just dont think I can do better than what I have.

If its trashy , I jump down to this smaller coil. It works very well. Good seperation, good depth.

The 11" DD Pro coil is also the only one I have for the Safari and is far and away the best stock coil any of my detectors have ever come with. Have at various times considered getting the 6 x 8" SEF coil for the Safari, but have found that by slowing down my swing in the really trashy spots and by also using more over-lap, there is very little that the 11" DD Pro coil will miss, if you listen carefully enough.

I use the 6x8 sef with my Safari, You should give it a try. I highly recommend one as a 2nd coil, it pinpoints and discriminates very well.

I got one coming from Kellyco and I got a 8 inch round excelerator coil coming with it. The small coil will probably use on it for looking for coins and jewelry mode. I am looking forward to getting my hands on it from what I have read about it. I used to have a MXT and sold it a while back. Looking forward to looking in all my old places as see what I might have missed.

Tell you what I have the safari and will never go back once you get the hang of it you will find some great finds.Take a look and some of my old posts I have some neat things all with the safari

I use the 6X8 almost all the time because of its ability to work in trash and iron better and pinpointing is right on.This works great in yards and groomed parks because my plugs do not have to be so large. As far as depth I run sensitivity high and get depth almost as good as pro coil on coin size objects. That being said, if I have time after hunting with 6X8 I will put on pro coil and recheck again.I have not really found that I missed that many coins but for some reason I find really deep toys with pro coil I missed with with 6X8.Under one old tree I found 41 lead soldiers that 6X8 missed but they were all about 12 inches deep.Found toy motorcycle with rider near sidewalk at about 12 inches also from 1930's.When I have pro coil on I never use pinpoint use sweep method to pinpoint otherwise using big coils like that when you hit pinpoint it will find largest target under coil, old large junk, not the sweet coin 3 inches away and you will be digging plugs more than hunting.Safari is great detector,if I thought there was a better detector out there I would buy it.Minelabs love SEF coils gives them almost SEE THROUGH capabilities in junk.
