Safari recovery speed

I am sure glad that the Good Beach Fairies are back on the job. Went out in the afternoon yesterday and the Good Beach Fairies were happily sprinkling coins on the beach. Picked up 35 coins and a cheap ring.
The thing that got me was that with all the coins I was picking up I wanted to go faster and cover more ground. I guess I got caught up in the excitement of the moment. Then I realized that I can't swing the Safari like my Garrett, Fisher, Tesoro. It isn't that fast. I must take it much slower and investigate targets. I can not just swing the Safari at break neck speed and quickly recover the coin and off to the next one as fast I can move. It must be a swung at a slower speed. I think that is why some are very disappointed in the Safari. It just doesn't react like my 250, F4, DeLeon, or what ever? It is life in the slower lane.
If you want a super fast detector, do not get the Safari because you will be disappointed. It is a slow steady and dig deep a lot type of detector. It is in the slow lane, relax and dig detector.
Thanks for reading....Z

Hi Zee, The one thing I learned through the years is to take my time with the detector. I don't do competitive hunts, so theres no need to hurry. Like Sprital wrote: the guys who detect fast have to miss something. To me its an adventure and relaxing. Mr. Turtle, How how many swings does it take to get to center of a good target? The wise old owl replys: "As many as it takes" Ron ;)

Thanks for the replies:
Hay, I am right with you guys. I swing and walk slow and steady. I can last longer and I am not as tired when I get home from a hunt. I only posted this because I think that when members read that the Safari is faster they start thinking of the recovery speed of the faster detectors. I think that is were all the confusion and dissatisfaction is coming from? The Safari is not like my GTI1500, F75 or MXT and it doesn't act like them. Don't get me wrong guys I wasn't complaining. I just wanted members to know that the Safari is slower and a lot slower in recovery speed. It has its own characteristics, but I have a feeling that they are just Minelab characteristics. I have never had a Minelab before. I have a feeling that a number of the members are stepping into the Minelab territory for the first time with the Safari?
Thanks for reading...Z

Hello,

Im kinda new in the MD realm...havent had a detector for 30 years. I now have f75, xlt & recently safari. My question is this in regards to the safari speed. I read one email that says its slow...then I see an speed test video that shows it super fast....Im confused.....Im sure it wont be the last time but I am learning.

Any comments? thanks

Hi James welcome to metal detecting....
James you have some nice detectors there. What I wanted to tell members was you can't swing the Safari fast and move fast because you will pass up a lot of targets or you will do a lot of back tracking. The target sound will come when you are already on the back swing if you swing it too fast. Move at a good fast pace with your F75 and than try the same pace with the Safari. You will see what I mean.
Now for what you are talking about fast, is, it does separate junk form a good close targets pretty good. You will get 2 tones good/bad target sounds. Put a nail down and a coin down a few inches away and the Safari will sound off on both targets.
I am not the best to give you advice. I just came back to detecting after years away. I have had to start all over again. I think the equipment is much nicer than the old days. I know many will disagree but they probably have been detecting from when they started back who knows when? I didn't, I never even saw a metal detector after about 1995 until I went out and got my detector 2005.
There is jargon and charts and you name it to show how good a detector is and how it operates. I don't know all of that but I do use the detectors and find a lot of stuff. It is a hobby. It gets me out and I getting way more exercise than I have in decades. I am retired and have been for 9 years. I am in better shape than I have been in years because of metal detecting.
I hope that I didn't confuse you too much that was not the purpose of the post. I was just trying to be honest..HH....Z

Thanks that does help.....and it makes sense to me. I saw one video on the safari were the iron was next to and/or on the penny.....it still sounded off extremely well. I dont think it could be any better. I did start out with some cheaper units....some missed items that others did not. I think so far...you get what you pay for.....generally. Ive bought about 11 detectors so far and am doing some fields tests on my own. So far the f75, xlt, and safari look promising so far. I am going to make my own test area with multiple targets and various items located in different soils and depths. I want to buy a tesoro to round out the collection. If anyone had tesoro for sale...let me know. I will post on here my findings to the testing of the various units. I think from that I will get a good idea what is best....at least for me. If I can find a cheaper unit that does the job....I would go for it....I dont need all the bells & whistles but nice to have.
Units I have

f75
xlt
safari(soon)
BH pioneer 202
BH quick draw 2
MPX
prizm 2
f2 & f4
ace 150

Just to clarify, the title of this post is just a bit misleading. There is a difference between swing speed and recovery speed: the former is how fast one can swing his coil over a certain amount of ground, while the latter is, as Zeekeys pointed out, the ability to quickly "separate junk form a good/close targets...." The Safari, in my opinion, does a great job on both in high trash density. What tests my patience, however, is the low trash density setting. I've tried it a few times, but recovery speed is slooooow, which means my swing speed must also be at a snail's pace.

Yes, I do understand that and thanks for the clarification. I would think it would be more important to cover ground thoroughly rather than how much area is covered. Maybe someone that competes would not agree but Im after King Solomans MIne or at least a good quarter or two. I think in life in general....fast kills and this would be one. In sum....I dont think I mind on swing speed as long as I can pretty much "x ray" the ground well. If I could only put my f75, xlt & safari together.......maybe duct tape will work.:lmfao:

Thanks again

Thanks Ray, I always hesitate to give technical advise because I don't know metal detecting jargon and think is it this way or is it that way? Do I have the right word? My pencil sharpener has been broken for many years. I was a bus driver, "Stagnation personified."
James if you taped those detectors together you would probably have a sound pretty close to what the kids call RAP music. Geez only kidding for you guys that love that :puke: sounds??? :sadwalk: Forgive me....Z

I hate to say it but I think it WOULD sound better than most rap music.....please dont call me a racist.......its not true......as I hate everyone equally.

All I know is if they took the all swearing out of some of the songs it would be a damn near mute song. :clapping:...Z

being the owner of a quattro, I would asume that the safari would seem like a supersonic recovery machine to me, but I would never purchase anything that was on the same forum page as safari / quattro ( fool me once....)

looks like the safari is off the menu for me as i`m a bit of a stormtrooper and will be looking for a quick machine, slow recovery= lost targets in my book.i`ll have to put a post up regarding which is considered the fastest/deep/beach+land machine, should stir a few owners to get on the keyboard:ukflag:

They are not even in the same leage, the safari is very fast if set up in the high trash set up,i have a f75, dmc11ba and i know all about recovery speed having owned a sovereign xs and gt,very deep machines but recovery speed stinks, the safari is a rea deep and good machine in my opinion, the only place i have not tried it is in very bad ground, has anyone out there tried it ?tony c
