Saturday farm field hunt yields old copper

Well, I watched and waited for the doppler radar to show me it was all clear and I packed up and headed out to a farm field I just recently received permission to detect. It's a pretty huge piece of land, butting up to a river. Right across the street from the field is a house that dates back a ways. It appears on all of the 1800's maps I could check out on this piece of land. I did see one map that looked as if there once was some sort of building at the beginning of the field. Sure enough, the minute I step out of my car, the field is ringing with the sound of iron. However, I had visions of sugar plums dancing in my head, and I decided to follow the stone wall all the way around the field to the river. I thought for sure I would be able to find some place people relaxed and dropped their goodies. 2.5+ hours later I was heading back from the river, with nothing but shot gun shells, .308 shell casings, and a ton of ignored beer can signals all near the river. Apparently boozing and hunting is universal. :)

So I get back to the corner of the field where I had found the iron signals, and started to notice broken up red brick. There was definately something standing here at one point. On the way up by the stone wall, I found the flat button, on the surface, I kicked away the leaves and there it was. About 40 feed from the wall I started to detect a higher section of the field. I got a strong signal, reading 7-26. I pulled my 12X15 SEF off the ground and still got the signal close to 1.5' off the ground. If it hadn't been for the fact that I was in an iron field, I probably would have ignored it as can slaw. I was able to pinpoint it with my trusty X-1. I flipped up a section of the dirt, and within 3 inches of the surface a nice George the III looking copper popped out. I could see the right facing profile the minute I picked it up.

Unfortunately, that's about all the detail I could get out of it. You can also definately see a "G" next to the shoulders, but the next letter doesn't look like an "E", more like an "I" or a "V". The reverse is worn flat with no detail that I could make out. Does anyone have an idea on if it's a real half pence or perhaps one of the couterfeits or imitations?

The round draw pull was less that 2 feet away from the half pence. When I flipped that out I was thinking no way is there another so close to the first. Well, I was right! :)

One last note, that wheatie I found on the way to my car, and it was literally only .5" down.

Anyway, enjoy the pics.

Sweet find!!! That definitely is OLD copper.

Nice old copper for sure. I also notice on the bottom of your post, the www.YankeeTerritoryCoinshooters.com are you a member? I used to be a member there myself. Lot's of nice guys and gals for sure. Fact is, by the way you describe the field and river, I've hunted those same fields myself. Keep at it, there is some nice old silver pieces to be found in that area also....

Best of Luck.

TigerNed, yes I am a YTC, you should check out our website and post to the guest book and say hello! Are you still in CT or have you moved elsewhere?

So, where were these places you used to detect at in CT with all that old silver????

Awesome finds!!!!!

I'm at work and don't have a book with me but I think you have a William III half penny(1695-1701).
William is in Latin as (my spelling could be off) "Gvillium". I found one last year but all I could make out was "Gvi"

They look "similar" but the name of the king to the left of the bust is different I.E Gvillum vs Georgvs. William was earlier. William III half penny would be dated
1695-1701; George II 1740's (+/-) and up to George III's reign (can't remember exact dates).

Looks like a Type III 1699-1701 William III Halfpenny. Compare position of the ribbon with the attached book photos.

Don

wow, thanks for the research, I had no idea it was that old. I agree, the ribbon position never matched up during my comparison of the GIII's. This makes it officially the oldest coin I've ever found.

Thanks for the back up Don. I guess I butchered the spelling but point made. Lots better with accurate reference!
