Well, I watched and waited for the doppler radar to show me it was all clear and I packed up and headed out to a farm field I just recently received permission to detect. It's a pretty huge piece of land, butting up to a river. Right across the street from the field is a house that dates back a ways. It appears on all of the 1800's maps I could check out on this piece of land. I did see one map that looked as if there once was some sort of building at the beginning of the field. Sure enough, the minute I step out of my car, the field is ringing with the sound of iron. However, I had visions of sugar plums dancing in my head, and I decided to follow the stone wall all the way around the field to the river. I thought for sure I would be able to find some place people relaxed and dropped their goodies. 2.5+ hours later I was heading back from the river, with nothing but shot gun shells, .308 shell casings, and a ton of ignored beer can signals all near the river. Apparently boozing and hunting is universal.
So I get back to the corner of the field where I had found the iron signals, and started to notice broken up red brick. There was definately something standing here at one point. On the way up by the stone wall, I found the flat button, on the surface, I kicked away the leaves and there it was. About 40 feed from the wall I started to detect a higher section of the field. I got a strong signal, reading 7-26. I pulled my 12X15 SEF off the ground and still got the signal close to 1.5' off the ground. If it hadn't been for the fact that I was in an iron field, I probably would have ignored it as can slaw. I was able to pinpoint it with my trusty X-1. I flipped up a section of the dirt, and within 3 inches of the surface a nice George the III looking copper popped out. I could see the right facing profile the minute I picked it up.
Unfortunately, that's about all the detail I could get out of it. You can also definately see a "G" next to the shoulders, but the next letter doesn't look like an "E", more like an "I" or a "V". The reverse is worn flat with no detail that I could make out. Does anyone have an idea on if it's a real half pence or perhaps one of the couterfeits or imitations?
The round draw pull was less that 2 feet away from the half pence. When I flipped that out I was thinking no way is there another so close to the first. Well, I was right!
One last note, that wheatie I found on the way to my car, and it was literally only .5" down.
Anyway, enjoy the pics.
