Scoops.... my try at welding aluminum. :D :cam:

Ain't the holes a bit too big? I made a sifter out of a large flower pot underplate filled with holes, works great in the sand. I'll take a pic of it and post it when I get time. Now I'm waiting for low tide next Monday morning at 5AM.

By the way, how come there aren't too many findings of ear rings posted? Have they been missed by our experts, or are they just simply not out there?

But my experience is that my detector (Fisher CZ20) just isn't particularly good at picking up small post/stud type gold earrings. I've found over a dozen, but all of them have been SS or silver.

I can also tell you that until I decided to put a piece of fairly fine mesh wire in my scoop, I would spend far too much time scooping only to have the item fall through the holes of my scoop.

I was lucky in most of those cases because I was in freshwater lakes and I was always able to let the water calm down enough to see to the bottom and swish with my foot enough to bring the earring into view so I could scoop it up slowly with just the end of the scoop and pop it into my bag.

I don't know if alot of water hunters who use scoops with large holes just ignore items that fall through the holes or what.

I would prefer not wasting too much time on them myself, HOWEVER in the back of my mind I'm always thinking the next one might be the REAL diamond earring.

If i dig a object that falls through the scoop. I know its either 1. Junk 2. Earring 3. Chain. The VERY first time i detected 3 years ago i found a silver bracelet. It fell right through the scoop, if i was in the water, i wouldnt have seen it fall. So when i dig a small object that keeps falling through, i scoop it, and hold the scoop up high so that it will not sift out in the water. I then proceed to carry it to the beach, and dump it high in the wet sand so a wave will not take the target. What type of earrings are you talking about? Studs? I know my dad has found a few small silver ones, i think im gonna have to take a new video soon on the Excalibur to see if it picks up thin chains or studs. HH yall!!

Rob are you useing argon gas or unimix?
Also are you pushing or pulling the puddle?
Welds are getting a little better,,looks like you either slowed down
or turned up the heat.Penetration looked better.Practice makes perfect.
Oh yeah,,,easy with the grinder.Should not have to grind your weld.
Get a stainless steel brush for clean up...and dont use it on anything but aluminum. That way the brush doesnt contaminate your work.
Good job,,,you go man.

We have been pulling, and today i read we should push the puddle. I also read that aluminum conducts heat 6x faster than steel. (learned that the hard way months ago, lol) I also read you need around like 90 amps or so for the thickness aluminum we have, so i need to turn the setting up some more. Were using Argon from National Welders Supply. I dont have any pictures today, but today i pushed instead of pulled, and it performed MUCH nicer. I didnt have to grind it. Is there anything else other than practice that can help? Thanks!! HH

Nope...thats what you have to do...just practice.
Sounds like you have done your homework.
Get the metal clean,,,have you heat and speed right.
Use the push puddle method with argon gas and go for it.
It will help to dial in the heat and speed on a practice piece.
Tig welding is really best for aluminum because you can control the heat better.
You may have to speed up as you go with Mig because the metal will begin to get hotter as you go.
As you get used to reading your puddle,it will not be a big deal.
Practice practice and practice some more...First thing you know you will be laying down some nice beads with good penetration.
Have fun with it,,and good luck with your scoops.
