Scored a few yesterday.

Looks like Butch and his Ohio raiding party left me a few keepers. First find was the holed and pounded around the edge 1858 Flying Eagle cent. Those are tough to come by so I'll take them in any condition. Two Indian head cents after a gentle peroxide soaking. Great details on the 1883 and 1884 cents. Also nabbed the 1917 Mercury dime and 1944-P war nickel. After a slow start I'm finally digging a few good ones.

...I just got a detector again. First time out was this past Saturday. Found an Indian a V nickel and a 34 quarter. Fun to get out again. Can't wait til I hit a good old home site. Its an explorer ll. Keep em coming Ed! I'll try to get something started on my side. Jim

Well we had to leave a couple for ya Ed. Good finds I like the flying eagle you dont come across those often, even in that shape. The indians cleaned up nice. Did you tell Charles about the two seated dimes and barber dime off his favorite mound. That was a real surprise.

That wasn't a raid. It was a scouting trip. Next time we'll do some serious damage. It does take time to get to know the parks. Even then I think I could hunt one of those parks everyday for a month and still only put a dent in it. IT really is a lot tougher finding those deeper coins.

You guys don't realize how good you have it. We work here for silver rosies, wheats and mercs. You work and get barbers, IHs, V Nickels, Flying Eagle Cents, Two Cent Pieces,Seated everything,...

Anyway, nice finds Ed. That's a sweet looking indian head. Too bad we didn't get to met.

I usually use this method on the nice ones that aren't covered in green gunk. Nothing works on those. I just soak the Indian heads in about 1 inch of cold hydrogen peroxide in an old glass for about 3 hours, while hitting them with a toothbrush every hour or so. After the final toothbrushing, I give them a final rub between my fingers and then hit them one more time with the toothbrush soaked in hand soap. I then rinse in water and give them a light buffing with one of my wife's dish towels(Don't tell her that !!!). Thats it. I find this method will turn a nice deep green patina into a nice dark brown color. Charles uses the heat the peroxide in the microwave for a minute, then drop the coins in and watch the bubbling action. After the bubbling subsides hit them with a toothbrush, if more cleaning is desired, remove the cents and reheat the peroxide, repeating until the coins reach the level of cleaning you want. I would experiment with a few less valuable ones until you get the hang of it.
