Scratchy sounds coming through headphones washing out the tones.

Has anybody else ever had this issue? I've used two sets of high quality headphones and sometimes I'll start getting scratching sounds that break up the tones coming to my ears. The last hunt I had to quit early because it just got to be too much. I have an old Explorer XS (still finds stuff DEEP!)

DG,
You may have a condition where the volume control wattage is too low.
The current delivered on many machines is too much for the controls that are used in most headphone brands. This is sadly over looked.
Ratphones since a few years ago use higher wattage sealed controls just for that reason. You may have dirt in the open carbon element or burn marks at the high end of the control. If you can, turn the control down to about 3/4 full volume to avoid the critical area.
Or, it could be a bad connection or cable.
