SE better on chains?

Big Boys Hobbies

Well-known member
My EX II doesn't do good at all on small gold chains. Anyone tested the SE on them yet? How did it work out?

Thanks, Bart

Bart,

We tried this gold chain with my SE this evening, It did respond to the chain. A good soft two way signal and read very low, Anything smaller I don't think the SE will respond.

We use this particular gold chain on our detectors for testing purposes, The Sovereign will not touch it and many other detectors as well. As big a gold chain it is just a handful can touch it now including the SE.

Hi Paul,

I see your gold chain looks more like a bracelet to me. Not to burst your bubble about the SE picking up your gold chain bracelet for testing purposes, but have you tried an actual fine gold chain to see if it will pick that up? Most gold chains are probably going to be smaller than the one you used as your example and if your sample only picked up a soft two way signal then I would have to think that the new SE isn't much better at picking up gold chains than the the older Minelabs.

Good question, One of our other friends has the E-II, We'll try it out on his detector within the week and will try the chain out on my XS as well.

I'll let you know if both other explorers get the chain.

Hello Eddie,

Even thought the small gold bracelet is a bracelet, it's still a gold chain when stretched out :)

Anything smaller I don't think the SE will respond, So the smaller fine gold chain most likely will be missed. However, You'll be surprised how many top end detectors miss this gold chain bracelet. So we use this gold chain for testing purposes along with a test bed of buried pennies on My friends yard.

Yesterday, I dug a 10" wheat penny from a pounded park, Now I'm starting to believe the SE does detect deeper, So far within 3.5 hours have pulled out five old coins from this Explorer pounded park. As before, we struggled to get an old coin for hours on end and now my SE gets five within 3.5 hours.

You noticed that the gold chain is a bracelet and this is important. There is a piece of metal connecting the two ends of the chain. That is what is being detected for the most part and the EX2 will in fact detect those bracelets.

A gold chain with nothing more than a clasp to close the chain is another matter all together. I know folks hate to hear it but eddy currents flow around the links in the chain. The links are only connected by "touch" so are not a solid piece of metal. The eddy current flow and lack of being a solid piece of metal combine to create a target that can be completely rejected. I have seen times when they sill produce a very weak signal and other times when they cannot be detected at all. I have seen this problem many times with silver chains and cheap costume jewelry chains. It is the discontinuity of the links and eddy current flow in the chains that are the problem with detecting chains.

This problem is common as we know to a VLF due to the way they discriminate against the soil and trash targets. The old TR detector would hit these with a very loud strong signal as will some "beach" detectors. I think a convention PI will also nail them.

To reject salt the soil rejection has to be slightly positive. In general soil rejection would be negative compared to refined metal. This,I think creates part of the problem, but notice that we can detect the gold chain in pinpoint with no problems and once can draw their own conclusions.

Paul the SE did not pick up the gold chain,it locked on to the solid piece used for engraving your name. sorry
