Hey All,

Just interested in finding out what coils you like to use on your SE's...

I have both the standard and the 8" ..... Upon reading several different posts on many different site's.. I hear that their are alot of people that prefer the 8" over the 10" and Many like the Sunray 12" as-well....

So all you seasoned Explorer user's can you give a bit of advice to a newbie...

Just looking at that 8" makes me think that I'll have to schedule alot of X-tra time at the park 'cause it looks rather small...

But I also hear that the 8 gives some pretty good depth and separation of targets....

Many different options on coils. I have a Joey coil I seem to use a lot as it gets into tight places and lighter than the stock coil I had on my Explorer II, but now that i have a SE I will use the stock coil more as I do like the SE stock coil. I also have a 5 inch coil as it is a must have if you work any heavy trash areas as it will pick out coins the larger coils can see. I also have the X12 too for those area that targets are far and few and need the coverage. I will be trying the new 8 inch concentric coil in the spring too to see what it can do. Anything bigger than a 12 inch coil is not made for park and ball field hunting as they are just too big.
What you got right now will work great for you and I think to learn the SE the 8 inch coil may make the learning a bit easier, did for me.

I have the Sunray X8 as well as the X5. And as Rick stated, each coil has its purpose. I like the balanced of the 8" and the depth is not too far off that of the stock coil with improved target seperation. The 5" is my favorite and is the coil I use the most as I hunt some very trashy sites (i.e. vacant lots). You have to exercise patience when using a small coil and don't try to cover the volume of ground that you would with a larger coil. I read somewhere that using a 5" coil is like "painting a battleship with a hockey puck".

All the coils you mention work well and if you have all three should cover most situations...Basically almost like having 3 units in one just by changing a coil and used correctly excell....My neck of the woods is Explorer country so getting silver is getting tougher every year and many of the fellows all have their favorites...

Pound a site all you want with the stock coil but if there's a measureable amount of iron and trash around...the 8 inch coil WILL put its mits on some finds you could not reach with the stock coil.

When there is iron and trash in abundance I have made more finds in a driveway sized spot with the 8 inch coil than I have made covering an acre with the stock coil. Think finds per hour not distance with this coil.

Thank You all,

I really appreciate all of your responses...... I was looking for those type of responses.... For the Past several years I have only used a Spectrum xlt and the only experience I've had with coils were the 9.5 OEM and the BigFoot coil....

Within the last 2 1/2 months I've purchased an Excalibur and Now the SE and I'm ready to get down and Dirty.... And Armed with all the knowledge that I can Absorb.....

So I'm taking it that It would be in my best interest to learn this SE with the 8" coil and then progress?

I have the Exp 2, you will soon discover you will need a longer digging tool since you were using the XLT. I went from the XLT to the Exp 2 I have the Minelab 8 inch, the stock 10.5, the Platypus, and the dreaded Wierd Orange Thing. I started hunting in dicrimination, now I hunt in IM -15, you will be hearing all the sounds, I hunt in ferrous sounds. How dose this relate to the coil? If the area is trashy and you hunt in discrimination with the stock coil you wont hear the threshold very much. So switch to the 8 inch coil. The stock sees a larger area underground and will pick up quarter size targets here in VA about a foot deep. The Platypus was OK for me just never found much with it. The WOT is another story, yes its heavy but if you shorten the rod it works much better. Fields without much trash are the best place for this. Recently I found the back plate of a pocket watch movement at 12 inches with no problem 7-28 . The stock coil will pick up stuff deep but wont ID the target as good as the WOT. Swing slow and keep the coil close to the ground. Listen for the high pitch sounds.

A WOT is a 15 inch coil that will detect at unbelieveable depths, is very sensetive to small silver items.

Coiltek "WOT" short for "Wonderful Orange Thing" See: http://www.goldbummin.com/coiltek.htm
