SE on the beach with 16.5" coil

Ok. So I dont know what I might be doing wrong, but I am a new minelab user. I was on the beach today and was using factory settings with a 16.5 inch coil. the deepest target i found was only 4-6 inches. what am i doing wrong?? can someone recommend some settings for me please? I am heading out tomorrow and wouldnt mind finding some deeper targets if i had the right settings. it can be pretty frustrating if you dont know how to set the new SE. thanks in advance for any input!

Try lowering the sensitivity to 15 or lower. If you have any other questions call me at 800-898-6673

Some beaches are so heavily mineralized that you might be limited to using the stock ten coil or smaller. My stock ten was hitting on coins more than 14 inches deep, which in the surf was plenty deep enough hole to attempt. I couldn't get my larger coils to settle down enough to be functional. First try lowering your gain from 8 to 7 (maybe even 6) and then either put the machine in auto sensitivity, or start lowering your sensitivity manually until it runs stable. Then lastly, put back on your stock ten. Remember the SE is not waterproof, so don't let it take an accidental dip.:detecting:

Hi MONTCOPATIM,
I see by your post you have had your SE for around 2 weeks.

You have yourself a sophisticated/powerful detector that takes some learning.
Learning to run this new detector is a very interesting time that will flex a good deal of the gray matter, the beach can be a difficult place to detect at times especially when you get down to the wet/salt sand zone.
Add to this patches of black sand and you have a noisy mix indeed, the big 16.5 inch coil is "seeing" a lot of the beach at one time and can be difficult to run smoothly in the wet/salt zone.
You will find things quieter in the dry sand zone, and can run your sensitivity somewhat higher, but down in the wet/salt zone you will have to back off the sensitivity and maybe your gain somewhat ~ especially true for a large coil such as you are using.

I would usually advise people setting out for the first time with an Explorer to stick with the standard coil until they get accustomed to the machine.

I would say that if there are deep targets there your 16.5" coil will certainly be the coil to find them!

Good luck!
