SE Pro coil - Is this right?

I just received my used Explorer SE pro. I was having some trouble pinpointing with it so I started air testing it.
My understanding of the DD coils is they detect with a blade type precision down the center from toe to heal and that was all. While checking mine going left to right, rather than a single squeal in the center, it gives a double squeal picking up only in the center section of each "D" and hearing only threshold on center line.

I tried to attach a video but had no luck.

All you need to do to pinpoint is wiggle the coil toward you until the target signal JUST barely disappears. The target should be at the very tip of your coil. Deeper targets will be an inch farther back. As far as the targets being to the left or right of the center.... well you are going to get a change in that signal depending of the sensitivity you have it set as because the coil creates a halo affect between the outter and inner coils. With a DD you have to remember to ALWAYS get that target on the tip of the coil because the targets will also hit at the back of the coil. So when you start digging..... you might wonder where it went. If you dont center the target you will get varied TID readings.... but the tone will be correct.

Hello Swing,
It sounds to me like you hit the pinpoint button while over the target. You have to make sure that the coil is completely off to the side of the target before pressing the pinpoint button. The Explorer is different in many ways. Pinpoint is one of those. If you happen to hit the pinpoint button while over the target, it sort of works in reverse - giving a signal everywhere except over the target (go figure). If there are lots of targets in the ground you may want to go off to the side and up a foot or so, then press the pinpoint button and quickly come down/over to the target.

Try this on the SE (works on the EII) - Tip for pinpointing the extremely deep/faint targets. Sometimes on my EII the target is so deep that it is hard to tell where it is because the machine is going lub----lub---lub. The tip is to raise the coil up a foot or so off to the side, hit pinpoint and quickly come down/over to the target. For some reason this always increases the ability of the pinpoint mode. I figure it has to do with auto tracking or de-tuning.

Here is how I pinpoint. Get a general idea where the target is in ID mode. Move the coil off to the side of the target. Press pinpoint and move the coil to the target. Make increasingly smaller sweeps until you have located the loudest spot (highest pitch on SE) - stop the coil. Now, drag the coil straight back toward you until the tone goes away. Finally, move the coil straight back up just until you get a good pinpoint signal again (highest pitch SE) - stop there. Here is the trick - the target will be mid-way between the tip and the center of the coil, not in the center of the coil. Sometimes large things will be closer to the tip, sometimes deep coin-sized things will be a little closer to the center, but for the most part figure three to four inches in from the tip on the Pro coil.

Sorry to go so long - coffee kicked in. Hope this helps.

I re-read your post and it is not really clear if you are testing in Pinpoint or ID mode. You will get the double beep on a shallow/surface coin in ID mode, that is normal. Raise the coil up about four inches and the double beep will go away. You should not get a double beep in Pinpoint mode. You are correct that the double D coil has a knife like hot area down the center. The whole coil is active though - I noticed Monday that my Pro coil was picking up a can that was a foot and a half away to the upper right of the coil (wow).
Take care BF

Big fang you are right with your second post.
In my post I was not referring to using pinpoint. Your explanation sounds like what I was trying to find out. I was able to borrow another coil to test, and it acted the same. Thanks to your reply and trying other coil I now believe my coil is ok, I just need to spend more time to learn. I have a Garrett GTAX550 that I've been using for 3 years. It has a concentric coil and acts much different.

Thanks for the replies
