SE weight and balance

Hi all-considering getting an SE. I've heard that they are fairly heavy and not well balanced. Would appreciate opinions on this subject. Currently have a Nauty with White's mod, X-Terra, and a couple of Tesoros. Thanks. John

It's a little lighter and a little better balanced than the Explorer II. I would certainly think it was lighter and better balanced than your Nauty...doesn't that have like a couple of dozen nine volt batteries on the outside of the BIG metal control box??? OK... it's like 4 nine volts, right? But still...LOOKS heavy.

I like the SE fine as far as the weight and balance goes...I can swing it for 4 to 5 hours or more with no problem.

Sold my Explorer II because of the weight and bought the X-Terra70 that I used all summer and did quite well with I might add. Used the 10" DD coil and got great sen. and depth.
When the SE came out I pondered this one over for a while and decided to take a chance. Weight is a biggie for me too as I've worked construction all my life and I'm 60.
The SE is easier for me to hunt with than the ExII. I usually hunt 6 hour stretches. used to be all day. I do carry a long handled digger and that works as a counter balance and my back does not bother me much at all. The front of the machine is like pointing a stick around, the weight is all under your forearm. I set the shaft length to keep my arm to my side and forearm in the shape of an L this allows me to stand erect and thus not back pain.
Hope this helps in some small way.

Hi John, I had actually heard the same thing. When I got mine, I couldn't believe how light and comfortable it felt.

you get an x-1 probe have it mounted on the side of the forearm rest (battery compartment) instead of on top of the upper shaft. Because it's weight is behind your hand and not between the coil and the handle it helps allot with the balance. That's where Ralph installed mine. When I first got my SE, what made it feel heavy was the fact I didn't have the lower shaft adjusted to the right length. When correct your arm should not be bent at the elbow but just be hanging straight down, nice and relaxed. Elbow straight. It's more like just gripping the handle rather than continuously holding it up.

I used to hunt with the rod extended out in front which would mean my arm was bent at the elbow. You would feel the weight after hunting a while. Someone on the forum said " Keep the rod short so the coil is closer to your feet and your arm straight" I tried it, it took a bit of getting used to but he was right, I could go for hours and not feel the fatique I used to. This was probably the best advice I have gotten. Try it, once you break the bad habit of bent elbow you will be surprised.
