Thanks for the replies to both Cedars and John4840.
Cedars, I have heard of the dials/knobs getting hard to turn because of non-use. I think since these units are built so user accessible and straight forward, I'd attempt the removal and cleansing of the troubled controls. It probably would be worth your while and since you've done mods with CB's, I'd think it would be almost a fun project. Fortunately, mine must have been played with just enough so that isn't an issue. This machine was in it's original box in an attic in the Statesville NC. I was told by the old gentleman that the box had become brittle and not in good shape due to moving it around and UV light over the years, but the contents were 100% mechanically and cosmetically. I owned a new White's 6000 (something) back in 1983, but only kept it three years because of non-use. Recently I wished I still had it and started looking again for one like it , then found this Sears/White's. I thought I paid a fair price $150.00 since it was such a good, newish unit. Also about $18.00 in fuel to go pick it up. It came with original manual, un-used instruction cassette, rechargeable battery pack (which took a charge), wall charger, and regular battery pack which holds 4 "C" cells. He had just bought 4 new alkalines for it so he'd be able to demonstrate it to me.
What my first choice would be is a White's Dual Field PI water/wet sand detector. I figure it never hurts to have two detectors, especially a discriminator type like the 6000. So I may just have to take the plunge for the DF-PI. I just hope I'll get to the coast enough (5 hours away) to justify it.
Gratitude,
The Ol' Prospector
