Here in the Upstate of SC, we've had virtually no rain since June, as we've had the 4th worst drought since 1898. Consequently, you can't dig more than 1" in our hardpacked clay.

Waiting for rain...

Is it possible to carry a jug of water with you and soak the ground where a good target hit's? or is the clay so hard that it just runs off?

Try the double hammer technique, we use it when the ground is to frozen here and it works like a charm, but be careful not to scratch up your finds. I use two Rock hammer's with flat backs and use one to tap the head of the other into the ground.

99.9% runoff; I need that slow, 2 day soaking kind of rain.

It took me over an hour to replace out a bad sprinkler head in my yard using a pick ax. I just can't see taking 15 minutes to dig a target that a few months back would take 30 seconds.

Hey! You guys are spoiled! Its that way ALL THE TIME here in Arizona. Wanna find a happy guy with a detector? Just look for a park that just got watered.

Here in Pa. have had so much rain digging has been the best in 20 years. Usually by this time our ground is rock hard also. Gosh those guys that live near seashores especially saltwater hunt all year. I guess thats why an alternate hobby is a good idea but don't have one myself...

I thought about carrying water to water the grass flap after a recovery. At 8.5 lbs a gallon, you don't want to carry to much. Jim

You could always take a leak (though not in public)
