Finally got out yesterday to test the waters (well, ground). I just went to a place close by, and there was still lots of snow, but a few bare spots were finally showing through. Ranged anywhere from consistency of butter to still frozen solid. Lots of mud too.

Since I wouldn't be covering a lot of ground, I tried out the 8x6 SEF coil on the SE this time, and focused on the thawed spots (all areas I've gone over before at least once). Although I didn't manage any silver peeps, I did have some modest success, finding four wheats. That tells me it's worth trying the small coil there some more when conditions improve.

Fun to be out again. Sore today!

Hope the weather cooperates for you so you can find some of the silver coins hiding with those wheaties.

Hey DF, congrats on the digs! I got out yesterday for a while as well. Managed only one coin -- 1944D wheat from about 7" deep -- and yes, it was great to be out again! Twas a long winter.....

How did you clean them coins so good. They look great.

The 50-D in the lower right came from under a pine tree area, and the soil wasn't as kind. It got the heated hydrogen peroxide treatment.

The other three came from an open area, with more of a sandy soil mixture, which makes all the difference around here on coppers. For those, I used water and a small sponge of 'Magic Eraser' (brand name for a melamine foam product). It is able to lift the dirt out of the crevices, yet soft enough to not leave scratches. I've had pretty good luck with this when they come from the right type of soil, but that has a lot to do with it.
