Second lession learned Battery 101...

Dead battery the second time out. Must of done something wrong charging it again (which was another mistake) Thank goodness David had a spare. Over an hour, I was on my way to a Great Day.

Tons of coins, pair of earrings, full can of Off bug spray, Ring of no value, but still a ring.

PS Battery is recharged and back to status quo and ordered a second battery for back up.

DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!!!

Ina, plug the unit in EVERYTIME you take it out. Don't count on the battery lasting for multiple trips. Have been using it that way since Jan. and she's still singing.

Recharge after 3 hour hunts a few times, you will have a 3 hour battery. Really want to do that ??

why isn't there a gauge to indicate when the battery is getting low?

I detect for 3 to 4 hours at a stretch, come in and the detector is in non use for 5 to 6 days. I understand that if I continue to recharge each time prior to use, a memory will develop. What can I do to allievate this? Should I turn the machine on and drain down the battery? With no gauge, I don't want to drain competely down. Will this shorten the life of the battery?

PS. FYI - the same hip mount on your site has two different prices -- one says $40.00 and one says $29.95.

The instruction book I got says to charge it everytime? no matter how long you hunt. That is right from minelab.

What kind of pack the Excal has.......

Can't treat them the same way, unless you treat them like Ni-Cd's.
Can't get into any trouble that way if you don't know.

Why are you spreading misinformation like that, GreenMeanie? What you see below is what the book says. The one that comes "Right from Minelab". What book do you have?

OK Guys and Gals......here it is officially from the Technical Department of Minelab.......the Excalibur utilizes a NICAD (Nickel Cadmium Battery Pod). The NICAD battery pack MUST be brought down to almost total discharge (until you hear the machine start to click at you), before it is recharged!!!!! If you recharge after every use (which would be convenient) and let's say you use your machine for 3 or 4 hours each time before recharging, you will end up with a 3 or 4 hour battery. There is no plan from Minelab to changte over to NIMH Battery Pods now, or in the near future, so please.......mind the use on the battery, before you recharge. Hope this helps alleve the confusion, and keeps you from causing your battery pods from developing a short memory!

Before I gave up on my Excal I made a 12volt light adapter to plug into the battery pod. I would allow the light to dim before charging. I like this rather than just turning on the machine to run it down.
