SEF coils, always better???

I ordered a couple sef coils of different sizes to use on the etrac and explorer ii. I am just wondering for the people who are using these coils if you ever found a time when you liked the stock coil better. This includes at the salt water beaches. I actually picked up the 8x6 (trashy areas,), 10x12 (general hunting) and the big mamma 15x12 (clean deep areas and beach?).
How are you guys liking the ones coming in recently?

I have the 12x10 and the 8x6.

I LOVE the 12x10, it's a fantastic coil that separates better than most coils half its size and hits silver like a pitbull on a porkchop.

I was a bit disappointed with the 8x6, honestly in my testing the 12x10 separated far better in trash, which I couldn't believe. Other than weight I couldn't see a reason to run it, but frankly the Minelab stock 8" coil separated better than the 8x6 SEF did again in my testing.

So it is a mixed bag. Maybe I got a bad 8x6, not sure but I wasn't too impressed, which was a letdown since I had very high hopes given how great the 12x10 has been.

Well UPS just brought a new 8x6 I hope i'm not going to be sorry I purchased it.

Put the 10x12 sef on my e_trac and it went crazy with sounds...put the pro coil back on and it was fine..hhmmmmmmm.
I had the sef on my SE for a couple trips and it worked fine....still like the pro coil better?

I had the 12X15 and sold it because of the weight but it peforms great so you should do well with it at the beach(I hunt the ocean beach). I also have the 12X10 and like it alot, seperates better than the stock coil and gets better depth but it is heavier. I used the coil on both an SE I sold and now use it on my Etrac, works great. I havent tried the small one, waiting to see what people say about it. Ive go the X8 now and that works really well so the small SEF would have to get some incredible reviews for me to try it.

wow it does not sound like too many people are happy with the 8x6 here. I hope I didn't make a mistake getting it. I really need a smaller coil as I have a couple of very trashy areas I want to hunt better. I was at one with the stock coil yesterday and found 6 rosie's and a bunch of wheats in 3 hours. I can't wait to get in between the trash as there is a ton of it,
Thanks for the info so far...
Any other feedback on these?

I keep the 15 X 12 SEF on my E-Trac most of the time. It took some getting used to. Sure looks big when you first put it on. I find myself switching arms more frequently due to the weight. Seems to do a good job at target separation and gets a little more depth. I take it off only in heavy trash areas.

Andy Sabich wrote a good article in the current edition of LT magazine about these coils. He does a good job comparing/testing the SEF's against the stock coils. For an expert opinion, read his article.

That's odd, I doubt it was the coil because it should have gone nuts on both if that was it. The SEF works great on my Etrac.

Ok I'm glad you brought this up because I read everything I could on the pro coil and the SEF before I got the SEF. But I have scince seen lots of good takes on the pro coil. I realy like the Sef for all the reasons stated but I also keep hearing really good reports on the Pro coil. here is how I chose. I wanted a smaller coil than the procoil so I got the 10x12 as the 12 x 15 was too large for what I had in mind. I would like to try the pro coil and would like to hear more comparisons about it and the SEF. Most likely my next detector will come with the procoil and then I will test for myself as for now I am watching this thread. Good luck.

Maybe. I gave my 8x6 another try and got better results. I'm going to withhold judgement until I give it time in the field that is the true test. Could be very good, I guess we'll find out!

I had purchased the 15 x 18,and it was a great coil........Great responce ,Good separation,Great depth and all, but. It WAS HEAVY....I sent it back to Kelly Co,and asked for the 10 x 12 ,and and extra shaft in exchange...........I haven't looked back......I like it better than the Pro coil ........except for a tad extra weight.........But the 10 x 12 gives you 1 1/2" more coverage per swing, and AT LEAST AS GOOD SEPERATION if not better..............I am happy with my 10 x 12 sef,and keep it on.

Put the sef back on my e-trac...in front of my house worked like it should? The other place must have something different going on ....when I go back there I will try again!
I still have a hard time with the E-TRAC.???....It seems like my SE with the pro coil just gets better depth and separation....The E-TRAC can pinpoint way better!
I just have a hard time locking on deep targets?...stock coin program....deep on ...fast off...sens. auto +3 .

Well I think you are right, as subsequent testing revealed a lot better than the first time around. I want to really give it a workout to give it a fair evaluation, but frankly I'm now planning on keeping this as all in all it seems to be a winner so far.

Honestly though, in my opinion nothing, not even this, beats the 12x10. That thing is the best coil out there for the Explorer/E-Trac series and I don't use the Pro coil anymore because of it.

Mike it took me a bunch of hunts to see the difference so give it the tiime you give your SE (if your just testing it that is and not hunting it) and see if you see a difference. About the only thing Im not that comfortable with on it is the angle of the grip.

I will still take it out and try....my buddy loves his!....and finds all kinds of silver...I am going to talk more to him about it....I just dig more nails ...maybe because ,I try for those iffy"s a lot....he told me not to try so hard...that is how I hunt with my Se....he says just swing it and dig good signals...when I hear a iffy ...I have to dig ..can't stand it...got those explorer ferrous addiction?..........and then again I could be just nuts...they say that happens about 50?.......to many toys!!!

I hear you on the iffy signals, they are difficult to walk away from, and even then they linger in my mind.
With the iffy signals there is a few things I do to determine if I will dig them. First I look at the depth, second I see if the target has trash close enough to the coil so it can not pass over it without being over something else, and third I scan the object from different angles to compare the signal size. If it seems thinner at an angle I may pass it up. I know it could be a coin on edge too and that is why I will dig one every once in a while.
Of course the site and can affect the mindset too.

Listen to your buddy. The percent of iffy targets that are worth digging on the E-Trac is way less than SE.If you ignore most of them you can cover more ground and find more good targets.About the only iffy targets I dig any more are the ones that depth meter says are very deep for given location and are breaking up a little but are consistent. It is tough to not want to run the E-Trac just like the Explorers but if you do you will never be happy with it.I think that is why more people who have never used an Explorer are pleased quicker by the E-Trac.I had to break a bad habit of always wanting to max the sensitivity out all the time also.I think my finds improved quite a bit once I started using auto +3 more,Ray.
