Glad this topic got so many replies. Thanks for all your input. It's kind of changed my way of thinking about this hobby. I used to dream of the day of a decent diamond solitare, but now I'm just as happy with a thick gold band.

As for listing on Craigs list aren't you concerned about people who lost these rings scanning the same listings? I know finders keepers but ...

FloridaBill, I'm glad you picked up on the fact that I wasn't putting your find down, I was just frustrated after hearing what the jeweller offered.

Stacey, yeah that was me on PB. No great finds.

I noticed on Ebay under "scrap gold" guys selling groups of rings with and without stones for scrap or to wear. These generate a lot of bids but they seem to come up under the melt price. Check these out and let me know what you guys think.
