Sensitivity Auto minus 1,2 or 3 why?

NebTrac

I've read through Andy's book over 3 times. One place, testing the E-Trac, he mentions on the 65+ year old fairgrounds running in Auto sensitivity -2. I'm just curious why there is even the choice of running less sensitivity than auto would run in. I can fully understand have the +1,2 or 3 and making it run a little hotter, but why run a little "colder"? Its hard for me to grasp the reasoning.

Thanks,

NebTrac

I'm going to edit just a little. I guess one reason maybe if you get falsing even running in Auto or looking for something on top of the ground. So far those are the only things I can think of.

Just my thought, if you have a lot of ground clutter/shallow targets it would help to knock them out maybe too.

Yep, I guess in some very high-trash situations, you might want to run minus auto. I prefer manual, as hot as I can stand it to get the best depth. If it's trashy, I just move slower, which can have the same audio benefits of reduced sensitivity without sacrificing depth.

I use -3 when I'm only targeting recently lost surface coins in modern parks. Then sharpened screwdriver to probe coin and pull it out with pointy nose pliers, very efficient and quick. Coin needs to be within 3" to 4" of the surface to do this, so I use a sensitivity only to look that deep. Sometimes I'll go manual and bring it down into the single digits.

I find that sometimes in a real trashy site with lots of iron etc that the reduced sensitivity shortens the iron null(sort of less magnification) and a tweak of a coin could come through
