Sensitivity in Auto is not a good setting to calibrate your meter.

I have noticed when my Sovereign is in the Auto setting the meter will get a small but significant bounce. For instance if a meter is calibrated for 180 with an air test you'll find the ID will bounce from 180 to 179 to 181.Learned this by accident.Just thought I would give everyone a heads up.Thanks Ron

I know on the Sun Ray meter which I like on my Sovereign GT does this which I really like myself. I try to calibrate with a copper penny or a new dime for 179-180 so that I find the 179-180 bounce means a dime or a copper penny while a more of a 180 hits is a quarter or possibly a silver dime. Now if it hits 180-181 bounce is where it seems to be silver quarters or a half or even a trash items like a alum can, but by raising the coil I can tell it is a bigger item and not a coin. I remember pulling a Franklin half out of a area loaded with old alum cans as when I raised the coil up the signal got weaker. I also dug a nice eagle medallion off a Cole car(never heard of a Cole car before, but were made before 1926 and the first Presidential car was a Cole Car for William Taft) in another spot I was at, just by lifting the coil up in another area that was loaded with the first alum. Hamms beer cans.
The rescaled 550 meter I don't notice the bounce as much and don't remember if I did with your meter you make Ron, but it is one great meter and the price is right.

Excellent info Ron.
Thanks

Thanks Jason and Rick.Maybe for an Auction to make some money for a charity. This meter is made with a face to represent Sylvia's Barn we hunted after it burnt down. This meter also includes the outside calibration pot. Again Thanks Ron

Looking Good Ron, these meters are getting nicer all the time and just will have to get another Sovereign and get one of your meters to let others try to see what a great detector with the 180 meters can do. Just too bad they are not made anymore as I still feel they are some of the best detectors there is.

Rick, after making about 500 of these meters,I've improved this meter.Even though I have a calibration knob on the one pictured the trap door ones hold the calibration well enough not to need the outside tuning pot.I agree it's too bad Minelab stop making the Sovereign because there isn't a replacement for this detector on the market. Thanks Ron
