Sensitivity question...

Does "auto sens" change according to the actual number of the sens or does auto just go to the highest stable setting? I see people write about "auto 22" or "auto 28" and such. That make's me think that the sensitivity number attect's the machine when you select auto.

Yea or nay? Thanks....

Julien

My opinion on this may vary from others, but the auto will set the sensitivity to where it is the most stable. If running lower numbers sensitivity auto works good, but I found the higher numbers in auto will over compensate in trash areas so it may run a very low sensitivity. I seen in trash at a 30 auto will not pick up a dime on top of the ground unless you touch it, but lower it to 16 auto and it works OK and can get decent depth.I feel the higher the sensitivity is set in auto the more it can over compensate, so if I run auto it will be in areas where I have to run lower sensitivity, if I want to run manual which I do most of the time will be in areas where I can run higher sensitivity so I can control it and not the SE.

The higher the number, the more the auto does.

I'll remember that.

I have got to try lowering my sensitivity to get the falsing under control. I have been trying to run at least 20 and have been falsing a LOT. I think a lot of it is just the ground here because I can run my F75 with the disc on 0 and the sens up 80+ and I will hear all sorts of signals, mostly iron but then when I get a good tone and pinpoint many of the other signals disappear. So, I think i'm dealing with ground mineralization and hot rocks.

I'll get it soon!

I would bet the reason the machine misses the dime at the higher auto sensitivity is because of your discrimination setting is set too high in the trash, not your sensitivity setting, number wise or auto/manual. Try that again in all metal and you'll see what I mean. I've read other posts like this and I've never understood them as neither of my SE's can reproduce this experiment that you're mentioning. If you still have the same problem, I would call Minelab as it sounds like yes, your machine is overcompensating in auto, but since my two don't, maybe there is something wrong with yours??? Just a thought.

I first notice this with my XS as everyone was saying to run the sensitivity high and in auto, then I got the EX II and notice it too would do this and never have tried it on my SE yet. I notice the higher it is set in auto the worst it will get in trash as it runs smoother, but miss more. On the test I have done with nails and such in my floor of my bar I found that when I lowered the sensitivity in auto I could get a better signal on a coin if I had the sensitivity too high, so in auto I never will run my sensitivity higher than 20. I use my manual sensitivity most of the time for this reason.
My settings has been in iron mask at around a -14 on the XS and EX II and -30 on the SE and will switch to a pattern that looks like a big T if I seem to be in a area with a lot of rusty bottle caps or pull tabs and just check iffy signals in iron mask.I keep 90% of the top open so i can hear the coins next to iron and a good strip down the center to include the nickles.
