Sensitivity

Yooper

Member
Just wondering what most individuals can get away with for their 8" coils. I have recently been working an iron infested park that turns old copper wheat pennies into green blobs. I can only run my sensitivity somewhere between 14-16, that's it. Any higher and I get falsing high tones that chirp.

Ok here goes:

Run wide open, no discrimination
Response - Normal
Volume Max Limit - 8
Gain - 6
Th Tone - 1
Variability - 10
Limits - 10
Sounds - Ferrous
Fast off, Deep on

Run with fast on and deep off. Deep off cause, you only amplify the small stuff. Fast because you want a fast recovery speed. I run my 7.5" M/L coil at 24 or 26 sometimes 22 if it is real bad. The chirps are the ends of the iron and halo. How ever it could be a good target. Since you have the SE start trying to pick out the different targets using the pinpoint ID. You must have the target pinpointed dead center using the VCO and then look at the Target ID number. I don't use the cross hairs some do I don't cause I know what numbers I am looking for. Know the difference in the numbers. Know what a iron target will read and know what a good targets reads. I use the the Excellerator 4.5"X7" coil now and I can run it at 32 even in the trash and Iron. Really for the iron and the trash you really do need a smaller coil then the 8" or the 7.5"M/L coil. Hunting the iron and the trash takes a lot of time and there is so much to know it would take me a long time to explain it to you. If you will PM me I will give you my number and maybe I can help you more. When you swing off the target you can detune the target down twice and the target will not detune out. You have to wiggle around in the trash and see if you have more then one target in the hold with the target to determine if you really do have more then one target co located close to one another. The SE will do this better then any detector out there. You just got to learn how to do it with your pinpoint mode ID. Once you learn how to do it those good targets will really start to come out of the iron and the trash. BTW I run my SE really close to what you are running. Only a very small difference just for my area. Hope this helps some. You are really trying to tackle some really hard things with the SE and unless you really know how th hunt the iron and trash I can see where you could be getting a little frustrated. Hunting the iron and trash takes a lot of time to prefect and it is a hell of a lot to learn. It is not something you can pick up quickly. I still dig some iron as even I get tricked once in a while. :D: :D: :bounce. I dig a lot of Tinfoil and Iron and that is how I got the nick name Tinfoil. The really good stuff is in the iron, pull tabs, and Tinfoil trash. Sort of like the old saying "Age and Treachery always over comes youth and vigor". To hunt those three you must have Patience,Perseverance. It is not a easy thing to learn. That is why I am a little  don't you know now. Later Jerry aka Tinfoil.

Thanks for the great post Tinfoil. I agree that the chirps are the ends of an iron halo. I can eliminate most of these by turning the sensitivity down. I still seem to get pretty good depth even though I am only running sensitivity at 14-17 or so. I seem to be improving at determining whether or not the chirp is an iron halo before digging a plug. I can tell it is a halo if I cannot get a good pinpoint. The iron chirps also do not hit from all directions. They are not as "fluty" either. I have been digging these anyway just to make sure there is no target there.

I too use the digital readout and do not like the smart find screen.

Pinpointing in trash is something I need to work on. I do not understand the detune aspect of pinpointing. I raise the coil off the target area and then hit the pinpoint button. Then I try to pinpoint the target. I am pretty good most of the time, but sometimes the pinpoint sounds just seems to fade away to silence. I turn pinpoint off and then back on and it seems to work again. This is confusing me a bit.

What do you run your gain at?

I am not getting frustrated with the operation of this beast, just want to make sure I am getting the most out of my machine.

Now if I put the joey coil on or the 10" I have to run lower sen. The 7.5" M/L coil I can run at about 26 to 28 sen. I don't have to change the gain down here where I live. Stay at 6 or 7 and play with the Sen. . You have to figure out what works best for you. Just don't worry about running too much gain or sen. You have to play around with it. To much gain for me distorts the tone of the target on my SE. The Combo to me is better then my Exp ll. :D: :D: . Later Jerry aka Tinfoil.

Hey Yooper...Thanks to ya for asking the questions...& to you Tinfoil for answering them....I'm usually lurking about, here & on the users forum...Sure makes learning to get the most out of the Exp. a lot easier:starwars:

Hey, I am not afraid to ask questions. There are quite a few experienced users in this forum who are more than happy to answer them and I appreciate it as well. Tinfoil and others have helped me come a long way in a relatively short period of time with my SE.
