Sensitivity

First off let me say im impressed with how the SE can find good targets in ungodly trashy areas. I hunted and old mountain park that was completely trashed. Bottle caps, beer lids, pull tabs and you wouldnt beleave the glass and bullets. There was so much trash that people had raked heaps and still didnt get down to the grown. I hunted it for about 2 or 3 hours trying verious things to get a solid threshold... which i never did just because of all the old fire pits. I still found 2 silver dimes and a half. Im impressed.
Next let me ask about sensitivity. How do you know you have it to high? I noticed at about 29 the cond numbers stayed fairly sold, but the ferr numbers would just a good bit. At 24 the threshold was cleaner and neither number jumped and i could get a correct reading swinging both ways. Im still not getting a lot of depth, but the field i hunted isnt old and looked like fill dirt. I can hold the SE at waist high and its stable at 31... so how do i tell if its running too hot?

You've already answered your own question. The machine should run smooth where you're hunting. And with maybe just a hint of the jitters in cleaner ground for maximum depth. I think you're doing just fine.
In starting a new site or just starting out for the hunt. I run my sens. up till it gets nervous as I put it, then back it down to what we just spoke of. I do this while moving the coil over the ground to get the right overall setting.

Hello all, Just curoius; do you guys do another noise cancel when changing sensitivity? Is the correct order if there is one, to set sensitivity first then noise cancel? We novice Explorer hunter appreciated all you guys inputs. Thanks, HH EddieB

I have always Noise canceled first and then dealt with the sensitivity. You noise cancel in the air for electrical interference. Then with the coil on the ground and moving to give the machine time to ground bal. adjust your sens. and other settings if necessary.

Thats exactly what the manual recommends as well. It plainly states to noise cancel before you try reducing sensitivity. Hey Coinnut it is called Mountain Park... but its in Casa Grande, AZ. They built the thing back in the late 40's and according to some of the local indian people. They also said they never maintained it for them... its a shame its a beautiful area but sooooooo trashed up.

Thanks Bob for your reply. The machanics of the SE and its operation wasnt that difficult for me to understand. Now putting what you know to practical use is another thing in the field.

Hey Dewcon4414, It is called Mountain Park!! It was a trolley track to a summit house and a very large amusement park. Built in 1894 and finally gone in the late(?) 1980's. Was Barber and Mercury city!!!! It's up in Holyoke, MA. It has been pounded relentlessly over the years, and even more since it went down. When I heard the name, I just had to ask. Thought I'd found another hunting partner. Good luck over there.
