Setting Realistic Expectations for Ourselves in the Field

As always, I appreciate Andy's remarks because for me, he mirrors what this hobby is all about. Here is my 2 cents.....
Most young boys (and some girls) are captivated by pirates and hidden treasure stories. When we grow up, some of us can make some of those dreams come true i.e. metal detecting or treasure hunting. We feel the thrill of the chase and hunting after lost treasures in the ground and elsewhere and just like pirates, we can actually keep our the treasure we find (without killing or hurting anyone!!)
We can hone our skills and improve our treasure hunting by learning from others mistakes and successes. Many years ago, I used to be in partnership with my 2 brothers in the antique business and although we no longer run the business, I feel the same thrill that I did then finding and purchasing 'treasures' when I metal detect now. I enjoy it and gain great benefits of exercise and meeting all kinds of interesting people and the thrill goes on.
I feel that if you strive to improve your personnel performance, not to seeking one upmanship i.e. "my finds are better than yours" kind of competition, then you will not be disappointed if you come home empty handed. Just reflect on the day and think of what you learnt, the beautiful scenery you saw, who you met and the fresh air you inhaled!! Enjoy the 'ride' because for the most part, the thrill of your finds of today will diminish tomorrow, next week, next month, and if you keep looking forward to the thrill of uncovering tomorrow's hidden or buried treasure, again, you will not be disappointed. There is no finish line to this hobby so enjoy the 'ride' and each day as it comes!! H.H. everyone.
