Setting Tone vs Disc

XP-Man

Member
I recently got done reading Adnys book for the 2nd. I have a few questions. I like to hunt by tone and being able to set tones and break points is n awesome feature of the Deus. I know high Disc effects depth but does running it wide open and setting the tones effect depth?

Not that I can tell with my limited experience with the machine in my test garden. Reactivity, Silencer, and Ground Balance appear to have the most impact on depth from what I've experienced --there are some good YouTube videos that show this. Frequency will have impact on depth depending on the conductive makeup of the target (i.e.--high conductivity targets provide a better response at depth with lower frequencies, and low conductivity targets provide a better response at depth with higher frequencies).

From what I have seen on any detector, the setting of disc in and of itself doesn't affect depth. What affects depth is that when using disc, if the detector "misclassifies" the target a bit, it could be "disc'd out" due to having a disc value set to close to a good target value that has been misclassified. And as depth increases the detectors ability to properly identify targets decreases due to lots of factors including mineralization etc.....and so the prospect of having more targets get misclassified a little and falling into the disc out range becomes more prevalent.

Most DEEP hunters using any detectors turn off the disc to get the deepest targets due to the inability of the detectors to accurately classify target ID's at depth.

The Deus got it right. Put a little disc in place at the bottom end for iron, put breakpoints in for target id ranges with different sounds and let the operator hear everything under the coil, however even tho you are hearing everything thats not iron under the coil, if you get a breakpoint to close to a good target value, it may "ring in" as a un-desireable target due to the same issues described above, the only difference is, is that you will hear it, but it may not sound like the good target you are looking for so you might pass it by anyway.

Best advice when setting up disc or tone breaks is to keep them far enough away from the good target values so that a little misclassification doesn't cause you to pass it by.

I recently purchased the 11" coil and immediately found silver targets in an area I had previously hunted many times, which I attributed to the new coils ability to do a better job of getting the target id right so I wasn't misinterpreting a good target tone as a bad target tone....

I'm no expert, but leaving a little space around the good target id's seems to help the machine get it right.
