Wide open until you get tired of steel crap. Then screen out the negatives and 40. I cant claim much open farm field experience, but wherever I am, I tend to start pretty open and then discriminate as my tolerance of trash goes down. But if you are hunting steel/iron relics, you cant really discriminate much unless you have examples of what you are hunting to "calibrate" to.

Depending on presence of trash, I toggle between relic and all-metal in open fields. I don't manually 'scrim out 40 for the sake of the rare chance that silver may hit there, as Croaker has reported on occasion in South Jersey. However, my "40 tid" recoveries have only been scrap aluminum and thin metal alloy.
You've had great success, Chris. What have been your settings?

I run ALL METAL ALL THE TIME. sometimes the iron can drive me insane, but I just stop after MDing & pickup a 6 pack of Heineken to calm my nerves
