Shabbona Park-Indian Creek Massacre

Prep1957

New member
Was out hunting 3 weeks ago in LaSalle County,Illinois at Shabbona Park place of the infamous Indian Creek Massacre where even the babies were slaughter a large monument was erected over the spot were over the victims were placed in one grave in the early 1800's.I and my dad have hunted this park for over 30 years and we have seen countless of other metal detectors hit this park.I found these two coins about 40 feet off the monument it read 23 but was repeatable most of the time I would not dig this due to the large amount of pull tabs but the depth gauge was almost pegged out.At ten inches I thought I found a bust dime but getting coins ready to sell tomorrow I see it is something else not worth anything but I really think they could have been from time of massacre. The Safari hunts slow but she goes deep.I cannot read any dates.

I guess you don't think abut letting a historian peruse your finds and how they might relate to the site. Makes me wonder whether these were around the necks of some folks that got killed.

Kinda like digging up at the Little Big Horn...

Sweet finds. Bummer on no dates on those coins. Did you sell them?

I know your not suppose to but a ran a fiber polishing pad with my cordless Dremel on the large sent I was able to buff out a date 1819 or 1818 not sure.On the silver coin which I have not looked up yet I could kinda see 3 numbers after using Dremel now you can only see two won't do that again on silver last two numbers are 03 did not sell yet.Sell most of stuff to Brother in Law and Nephews. What is everyone getting for holed large cent in bad shape I have been getting 13 dollars.

I'd stay away from cleaning coppers that hard, break a toothpick in half and place the copper on it and place in a small plastic cup or small glass. Pour a few ounces of Hydrogen peroxide in to cover coin. Let it sit and fizz for 24 hours, change it a few times if you like. The crud will bubble and flake off. I will give some of the crud a gentle rub a couple of times with a soft cloth during the soaking. Take it out after 24 hours, put some petroleum jelly on it and work it around with thumb and forefinger for a minute or so then take a SOFT cloth and clean the petroleum jelly off of it. Here's a before and after pic of this process. i know there are seasoned coin collectors that will tell you NEVER do anything but use gentle soap and water, but I like the method I use, and since I'm just collecting them and not selling it doesn't really matter. Nice Reale by the way.... if you're gonna clean your silver try giving MS-70 a shot, it works well and doesn't damage the coin if you use it properly. Happy hunting.

Wow your coin really cleaned up nice thanks for the info I will try it on some coins I got laying around that I kinda gave up on.

if you've already worked them the peroxide method may not improve things... but can't help to try. When you pull an old copper, injun, wheatie etc. from the ground leave it as is and then use the above method. It's not a magic bullet by any means, if the coin was in bad shape going in or is corroded the peroxide method won't magically restore the coin. but it's a great low impact way to clean them in my opinion, but everyone has there own methods, try'em all and see what works best I suppose. I have pile of wheaties that I've never even cleaned so they are great to experiment with. And as always never start cleaning a coin until you know what it is, if it's a valuable coin anything you do to it will only de-value the coin. I'm fortunate enough to live in Massachusetts so there is a lot of history and many old coins in the ground, typically when we find wheaties, barbers, mercs etc we're happy but it's not a big deal.... spoiled! Most of the sites we hunt date mid 1700's so when we do find coins they are usually early 1800's late 1700's. Most of the mercs, barbers, etc we find are just drops from hunters and not really related to the site history. Good luck.

Great finds Prep! Love finding a bit of history. You're right in that setting, a 23 would be tough to dig if it weren't deep. Thanks for the numbers.
Keep at it!

The original families of the massacre still farm close to this park.As you can see the original post was in June I found a lot of old coins in this park at that time.Later in the fall/November not 200 feet from this very monument I was goofing around with Safari, and few other high end detectors lowered my disc. to Zero,Conductive, went to Relic to get rid of Icons and pulled out 11 Barbers 1 seated and a very nice white gold woman's ring all about 9 to 10 inches in about 40 hours of hunting caught me by surprise and the best part I knew they were good readings got better with more sweeps read in the 30's.Would click over to coin and jeweler preset signal would not repeat but would give funky pop now and then.Went to relic custom program and all metal new they were good although I do not like hunting in ferrous.Weather got bad am looking forward to this spring.I had hunted this field hard with Etrac and Safari mostly with preset programs look what I missed I no longer have the Etrac I like the Safari better. It looks like I have to go over everything again even with my 6X8 SEF.I think getting rid of Icons speed up response/recovery time.I have to thank other members of this forum that have already been hunting this way if not for them I would not have even tried this program I will admit I did not think it would make a difference. I think it gained me about 2 inches in this Illinois soil. Not to be too greedy anyone got even a better program for Safari?Looking forward to spring.

Prep -Glad to see that you were able to hit that area again & with great success. After the thaw, I'm looking to follow your example with customizing the factory search modes to improve my technique and search results. Thanks for the history, too.

Prep -- The William Davis massacred on this site is my husband's GGG-Grandfather. If you would like to sell any finds from the site please email: Trumar@shaw.ca

Hey Prep, would you post that custom program, I missed it and would like to give it a try.
Thanks,
Bunker

I have never even seen SE Pro out in field so I can not tell you anything about its depth.I have owned 2 Etrac which I bought cheap and sold for nice profit had each for several months nice detectors with lots of usable options.I could see no depth advantage between Safari and Etrac both would pick up targets the same depth both would have to be run in a manual program for true depth potential.Getting coil and noise cancel as close to ground and height you are hunting is important for both detectors.I kept and like the Safari for it simplicity and depth.Like I said If I thought there was a deeper ID detector out there for coin hunting/turf hunting I would buy it.If I was limited to on how many holes I could dig in a day the Etrac will ID better for coins.

I read this program on this Forum from one of the other members I waited a few months to try it because putting a conductive program on ferrous side sounded stupid to me when I already had 4 conductive programs.Well I do not mind eating crow as long as it tastes good.Putting on relic side gets rid of the Icons I do not know if it helps on depth but I noticed recovery time and ID time is quicker .Using the Safari with stock pro coil I would start my program on conductive, zero disc and everything lower blocked out then I would push and hold on relic program until it was entered you could confirm that you did it right by little C that would appear in relic program.,trash set to low ,threshold set to to one bar above silent, set your sensitivity as high as you can in manual I was running about 17.Noise cancel often at the height you are hunting. One thing on the deep dimes I could not get signal for them in pinpoint until after I cut plug.I also could not find them when I went back to preset CJ and Coin mode it should not have made a difference but it did maybe the Icons? if you put sensitivity to auto forget it there gone.I dig only things that read about 8 inches or deeper beaver tails will read deeper than they are and I found a lot of small lead 22 bullets down as far as 8 inches.I dig a lot less iron square nails and iron junk. If you go to high trash you may still here deep coins but signal is weaker and may not repeat each time and you will hear a funky pop once in a while still good target.Good luck let me know if you find better way to find deep coins by your posts you are going to wear yours out before I can even hunt again.

Thanks Prep, I will give it a try. Heading out today with Marty to scout out some places to hunt. I will keep you posted.
