Short Relic Hunt With SE

First off Thanks to Jonathon, he couldnt hunt today but gave my brother and myself the OK to hunt one of his spots in Resaca. Found a 69 musket ball, Gardner, and Enfield, all dropped and in good shape. Not too bad for an hour and a half in a heavily hunted area. Would post pics but can't get them small enough. The round ball and Gardner were both about 7 1/2 to 8 inches deep and gave "iffy" signals as the ground on that trench is pretty goofy and full of nails and wire. The Enfield was about 5 inches and gave a strong hit. Kind of suprised that there was a strong iron signal within a few inches and it didn't seem to degrade the signal from the bullet. I was using the smartfind and trying to learn a little, seemed to be more accurate than the digital numbers when I switched to compare. We left when the coil of my brother's xterra 70 broke completely off the shaft (it wasn't funny but we both laughed). He found a nice Spencer carbine bullet before that. Now he has an excuse to buy a 10.5 DD. Anyway I found some nice bullets and learned a little, still got a lot to learn.

How is the SE comparing to your Safari? Do you feel that the extra programming makes a difference when relic hunting?

I haven't been out in over two weeks, between the weather and other obligations. Starting to get itchy :sadwalk:

So far it seems that the Safari is just as deep as the SE. I haven't learned enough about the SE to actually tweak the settings. I used just enough iron mask to eliminate any ground noise, still using conductive tone although all but one relic hunter has told me to use ferrous and an open screen (all metal). I still have a long way to go on learning the smartfind screen, but it does seem more accurate than digital. I think when I learn the options this machine will be great for relic hunting.

I did take it coin hunting last Saturday and found a silver thimble and a 1943 mercury dime in a hunted out spot. Didn't really know what I was doing.

Hey oldfart7,

You will like the new 10.5" 7.5kHz. DD coil. That is if you like digging a 10 to 12 inch hole for a minnie ball.
