Should I update my Coil?

MichiganGuy

New member
I have a 10 to 12 year old Garrett model 2500 and I will be using it in the desrt of Arizona next fall. Do I need to invest in a newer nugget coil or a larger one as well? Any other upgrades I might need would be appreciated. Thank all! Happy Hunting!!!!

I've prospected with the 5"x10" Scorcher coil, but I didn't have any luck. I know of some guys that have done well with that setup, though. I always had better luck prospecting with the Scorpion and Infinium. I do have that 5" EXcelerator now and plan to prospect with it next fall. I've found some tiny bits of foil and small chains with it in the tot lots. I love it. It's double D, so it should be perfect for the gold fields. If you plan on prospecting an area known for larger nuggets you might want to try that 10"x14" double D coil.
Best of luck to you whatever you chose to use. Happy Hunting!

Garrett put in a new chip a couple of years ago into the GTI 2500, GTI 1500 & GTP 1350. It allows the detector to operate in much higher mineralized soil as previous.

Call 1 800 527 4011, ask for Melinda Harper or Sue Wilson and get a quote to have that new chip installed. The stock imaging coil was also upraded to a more stable one which can be run at a higher sensitivity. (see below)

MichiganGuy I see your 2500 is 10 or 12 years old, has it been fitted with a newer chip put out by Garrett ?

If you're still using the old white Scorcher coil you would be wise to bump up to the newer PROformance coil or one of the DD coils If you're going to nuggetshoot and you should get the new mineral chip installed ( cost $40 ).

but just remember the new stock coil is awesome and I use it if mineralization allows for nugget hunting as it is the most sensitive of all the coils except for the 4.5 coil. I recommened getting your 2500 hooked up with new coil and minerlization chip. If the 2500 gets too noisy to detect comfortably with 9.5 coil go with the DD's, but they are not a sensitive as the concentric coils, so you will have to find bigger nugs to here them.

Thank you all for the update information! I will be getting a new coil and the chip as well. Guess I will look into which coil would work best for me out in highly mineralized areas like the mountains in Az and desert. Thank you all very much and Happy nuggie hunting! :detecting:

Hi ya Bill. Yes, I still have the original plain white coil that my model gti 2500 came with. I know at the time it was a top of the line, but now I need to update it for nuggie hunting out west. Thank you for replying. I have gotten alot of good info from all of you out there! Take care my friend.........Eric~

Good luck on those nuggets. Hope you find a bucket full. Since I used to live there long ago and have been all over that state, what part are you heading for?

Good morning Bill. I have a folder I have been putting together with maps and stories of lost gold and what always seems to pop up is around the Prescott area. I dont know how much of that area is taken by the LDMA and GPAA. I used to be a member, but that was years ago. I have so many areas I wanna check out around Az. Bullhead city and Kingman area seems like a good choise for nuggies too. I hope to find work out there and possibly work 9 months on and like 3 off. lol Thats my pipe dream anyways! haa haa Good chatting with you Bill and Thank you for your help. Stay in touch eh. Laterzz Eric~

Yeah I've been to all those places. You can get a book and info from the Arizona State Geological Department showing all the gold deposits in Arizona and where they are. Might be a good idea to pick one up. Good luck in your quest.
