Shovel Question

Ks Coyote

Member
I've been hunting the fields hard this fall, and the ground here in Kansas is SOO dry that I've broken two shovel handles already. What does everyone use, is a fiberglass handle stronger. How about the specialty detecting shovels, are they any better?

You might want to have a look at WW Industries. (Lesche). They offer high quality digger's that I think will meet your needs. Some of the dealer/sponsors of this forum sell them.

I use a 31" Lesche Sampson with serrated edge. Takes a helluva beating .. would highly recommend.

Hi Ks Coyote, For over 40 years now I have been digging with a "chopped" wood handle "sharpshooter" shovel. It is overall, 24" Lg.. with 11 1/4" X 5" blade and 13 3/4" handle.I drilled a hole in the end of the handle, and "rope slung" it so I could shoulder it when carrying it.Also padded (ductape) the end with some foam. I ground the footsteps off round and sharpened both edges of the blade part way up for chopping limbs when needed. Don't believe you will need a limb chopper in those Ks. fields, but the shovel is probably lighter than most unbreakable steel shovels, just right for me on my knees, and I haven't broke it in all these years..At times of extreme drought and dry soil, you may have to use a long enough shovel to put your foot into, but when it gets that bad here in Ms, (it does) I simply put my energy into some more research, while I am waiting on the rain. HH, Charlie
