Silent Search??

I don't understand the purpose of the silent search switch on the GT. All mine does is change the range of the threshold switch. Does this switch change the way the detector hunts?

I think Minelab made it an option on the GT because some people liked it, it was always a mod on the earlier sovs. I think it originally was intended for those who didnt want to hear a threshold(not a lot of VLFs utilize a threshold in disc). Kinda make the detector a little more user friendly.

I'm not really clear on the iron mask either. I've read where it will helps to pick up coins next to iron but causes more iron falses. I plan to hunt without it some and see if it makes a difference.

hi all this is my first post.

i have a Sovereign XS2A Pro machine and mine has had a switch fitted so you can work in either silent search mode or not. i like to use it in silent search mode as it is defantly more user friendly.
in silent search mode, when you go over a target the machine has just found and say you go over the target again to check it out and the detector hasn't canceled the signal out. the only sound you will here is the tone of the target found nothing else.
in normal setting in the same situation the threshold gives you pitch changing noses witch can sound a bit confusing when your new to using the machine.

my mate who also has a Sovereign machine keeps saying to me the threshold is just telling you that there is other targets around the one it is telling you to dig. i always attack a target found in all directions anyways to test that area out.

personally i think when using the silent search mode the target tone sound is better locked on to were the good target is in the ground.

All this switch does is lowers the threshold so you have no threshold tones and yet when going to all metal pinpoint the threshold will be back, but not as loud as it would be if you manually turn the threshold down on the older Sovereigns that didnt have this switch. There was a jumper wire the detector had to come apart to get at to do this on the older Sovereigns. The purpose is for those that were used to a detector with no threshold as some dont like to hear the tones changing and nulling when swinging the coil.
Myself I felt it was a waste to use a silent search as you could not tell if you were going to fast and missing targets close to trash plus you never could hear the deep target you hear when you run a threshold. This has been proven several times on the real deep one that only give a tone change. If going too fast you will go over good targets that are deeper as you will not know if it is nulling on iron like you would with a threshold.
Now that I have a GT that has the silent search I can see a use for it as if you are clad hunting or not worried about the deep targets you wont have all the different threshold tones to listen for. I also see in a area where targets are far and few you wont have to listen to the iron growl you would normally listen too as it seem like it always sees a piece of iron or something that will cause the threshold to null and come back with the low tone growl. I have used it in some of these areas and when I start getting more signals I know I am in a area where more action may have been and switch back to the threshold so I can hear that threshold null or change better.
For many the silent search will work good, but those that want to get the most out of their Sovereigns the threshold is important to get the deep targets and those close to trash I feel.

I did the silent search mod on my 2a one time and took it out into a location that I was very familiar with.
It only took a few moments to see that I was completely losing touch with the detector and the ground without the threshold.
After about two hours I was so disgusted with it that I went home and changed it back.

thanks for your opinions guys.
because my machine has had a switch fitted i will take on board what you guys have said and experiment a bit more between the two settings.
thanks..............

just thought i would show a picture of my xs-2a pro machine with the silent search switch fitted.
