Silver Dime / verses Clad Dime

all iron

Member
Went out today and found one silver dime.
The silver dime was a solid 85 and the clad dime was 82-84

Using the omega 8 with the 11 inch coil

anyone else have any input when it comes to silver verses clad?

Yes, I find silver dimes reads a couple of points higher then clad and the same with quarters and halves. If deep, even a little more and bouncy when slanted or on edge. HH jim tn

...is correct. On a good machine..usually the silver will read a couple points higher. Provided.......and this is critical........that the clad & silver coin lay in the ground exactly the same. All other variables the same. Silver or clad on a angle or junk nearby can read like.....well.....anything. Don't use the 1-2 point meter reading to pass up a coin as a clad. You'll lose alot of silver that way........30 yr's of detecting taught me that little lesson.

yes!..silver "generally" will "hit" higher as a result of the better electrical conductivity of the metal itself!
just sayin!

Sliver does read higher, unless something else is around it.

correct!..never do that,as you WILL walk over silver!..just sayin!

First, congrats on finding the silver dime. All silver makes a good reward.

Second, I'll commend the Omega as it is a very solid performer.

Third, I'll stress that any VDI reading that we might get in an "air test" or perhaps from a located target (if the ground is favorable, there's no masking, and the targets is in a good relationship to the coil) is just a bit of useful information. What we need to look for is a general VDI response that is similar to the types of targets we are looking for, and be alert to how 'tight' the VDI reading is.

Should the VDI numbers be too jumpy and wide-ranging, then the target might not be a coin. It could be, but have nearby masking trash, or it could be a foreign-made coin of nickel or some other mix of magnetics metal. It might be a coin on a bad angle, too deep to ID, or in some challenging ground mineral environment.

Notre, too, that you can use your Omega and a few sample targets and compare the responses when changing search coils. If you use the stock 10" elliptical concentric, 11" DD and 5" DD coils, you might notice that the Ground Phase read-out will be slightly different, even if you GB over the very exact spot. the VDI readings can also differ between coils a little.

I have found silver dimes and clad dimes in some areas where they all show the exact VDI readings to be similar, as well as somewhat different. At times the silver had been slightly lower or slightly higher. All found in similar depth ranges, there were just a few things that influenced them to make a difference.

I sure wouldn't try to isolate silver from clad simply by the VDI reading. When in doubt, see below.
