I haven't detected much this year, only about 12 times. Found this on Monday and thought it was worth a post. I was detecting an old park in an area where I've found old stuff before. We've had some rain lately and a few cold spells so the grass is laying down. I was getting good depth, finding six older wheat cents. This gave a good silver signal, and good depth. It ended up being about 8 inches down. When I scooped it out I thought half dollar. It was partially dirt covered but very shiny, but then I noticed the edge had no reeding. Did a little research and found the phrase "Reward of Merit" was used by schools for prizes given to students for some achievement. The style of the engraving looks old, and these were common in the late 19th century. The reverse side is blank. Size 29.6 mm, versus 30.6 mm for a half dollar. Other finds were a 1904 IHC, and the six wheats. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
PS - there is a nub at the top where a loop had been attached.
