Using the Safari in ALL METAL mode, set for High Trash. I hunt in All Metal mode probably 95% of the time.

Sweet :)

I've got permission to detect in a pasture that use to have a school house & ball field. Tried it for about 30 mins last weekend with no good finds, just 3 tabs, nail & part of a molding. I'm still having troubles with the safari just can't seem to get the sounds down. With snow on the ground I did air test in the house, had a silver dime, very small old toy gun, body of a hot wheel car, small gold ring that I had found with my old whites classic id not my safari. So ran them under the coil to try and lean the difference between the silver dime & they all seemed to have the same high pitch sound, only difference was the gold ring that gave a blah lower sound. I'm sorry to all the Safari lovers but I'm about to try and sell the thing & get another White's.

Great finds M.M. !.......usually, most silver plated items have been stamped with the marks EPNS (ElectroPlated Nickel Silver) so no matter how 'silvery' an item looks, look for the EPNS mark first as that will instantly let you know.
Kscowgirl, if you stay with the Safari, you won't regret it. It definitely is a silver magnet AND will get the gold for you. There definitely is a learning/frustration curve with any FBS machine. Each of those tones is identifying a target under the coil, it's just a matter of figuring out what it's telling you. If you stay with it and practice AND learn all you can, it will serve you well.

Yeah I don't think its Silver Plated, I scratched a part of the handle & if its plated its sure a thick plate because there's only more silver under the surface. If I ever sell it for melt I will cut the handle in 2 to make sure its solid, But after scratching through it I believe it is solid silver fork

If it doesn't work For You, you should ditch your Safari and get what does. But before you do, may I ask how many hunting hours you have on your Safari? And roughly how many of those are in target rich environments such as parks and current schools? I think its important to associate what you are digging/seeing with what you are hearing. Hunting sparse areas like fields and (some) beaches wont teach you a machine as efficiently imo.

I didn't listen to all the Internet pundits that said it will take 40-60hrs on the Safari to get comfortable with it, but luckily I am pigheaded enough that I stuck with mine until that magical day when something just CLICKED and I started ID'ing and pulling up targets by sound alone. I still remember digging coin after coin and my wife asking me "didn't you hunt that exact area last week and get nothing out of it?".

M2, congrats on the Washington and mix of finds.
Cowgirl, you're not alone...When one reads through this Forum, many of us have experienced or had issues id'ing targets with the Safari or other FBS units from our starting out with other brands of md's...I had no idea what music she was singing when initially using coin mode as suggested for newbies and dug all targets and started keep stats of where these recovered finds tid' at........Try to stay with it. What stats (settings) do you mainly hunt with ? The finds posted here and also on the Today's Finds forum are quite impressive. I think I'm still learning new sounds after 4 yrs with the Safari and I keep handy and toss on the ground at each site that I visit some targets of recovered coins and others metals (poptops, scrap, etc.) so their audio is fresh in between my ears. As noted by a few others, I prefer to hunt in relic mode (ferrous, as icons serve no purpose in choosing what to dig) as I believe the audio is clearer on distinguishing ferrous from conductive target composition (compared to coin or coin/jewelry modes). All metal mode (ferrous) is great too, but I use it only when chosing to dig all targets, especially if a site isn't producing many targets.

I totally agree. I cut my teeth on the old VLF/TR machines, then the motion detectors. When I first took my new Safari out I was totally lost. I remember thinking I spent all this money on this Minelab and I'm never gonna understand it. It wasn't long and it all came together and made more sense. Stay away from high trash areas at first. Get a good set of headphones, really makes a difference with tones

Howdy All thanks for the encouraging words, & I don't want to take away from Metalminer and his great finds this was his post. But I do appreciate all your input. I usually hunt parks, homes here in town, bought the smaller coil to try and help spot the targets. Run the machine coin/jew, high trash, auto . I've got the book that I've read & cross saved programs. I've put in around 50 hours I would guess, go out on my two days off and evenings after work so I'm pretty sure I've put in that many.

MetalMiner--I say give the Safari another chance! In 40+ years of metal detecting, I have used every metal detector brand known to man. Two years ago, I tried my first FBS Minelab, and my silver total for the year tripled. However, even though I was learning to switch hands occasionally, at 74 years of age, the Safari seemed a bit heavy for me. So I went and purchased another top-of-the-line detector from a different company. Guess what, my annual silver total went down to 14 silver coins, while just a year earlier with the Minelab Safari I found over 30 silver coins. So this year I am going back to the Safari. To lighten the weight a little, I have purchased the 8 X 6 SEF coil that has been highly recommended by many detectoriists on this, and other, forums. Yes, there is a learning curve with any FBS detector, but as many have said, they really lock onto the old silver coins (and silver jewelry). Best of luck to you in 2014.

I think we are beginning to confound the OP's thread. What say we take the new Safari hunter's woes to a new thread- I think that discussion may help a lot of new Safarians.
